L.T.L. and “ CRADLE ROLL.”

1 have much pleasure in presenting my report : You will notice a large increase in the nuinW of Unions working the “Cradle Roll ” also in membership. Forty Unions have taken up the work ; thirty-one sent in reports. Number of children on the roll, 14111. Dunedin heads the list with 200, increase 172 ; Blenheim, 100 ; New Plymouth l.’ks, increase 00. Kleven Unions have taken up this work during the year : Wellington, Stratford, Waitara. Tapanui, Tuakau, Warkworth, Mauaia, Pt tone, Lower Hutt, Kltham, and Levin. Testimony has come to me of the great value of the work in interesting and enlightening mothers who might otherwise be indifferent to Total Abstinence. Garden parties, picnics, “At Homes,” have been well patronised in almost all the towns where efforts have lieen put forth to raise money. Wellington held successful meeting in Courtney Place. Dr Platts-Mills gave an interesting talk to mothers on the training of children. Christchurch held a very successful “At Home. Mrs Moreton, President of the Society for the Health of Women and Children, gave an interesting address. During the year 22 were added to the roll. Dunedin held a concert which cleared over To for the w ork.

Auckland City has only 27 names, hut the mothers meet weekly for Christian intercourse, and no doubt they will interest others in the Temperance cause. Ponsonby reports 47 on the roll. Social was held, several members spoke and mothers were urged to the necessity of total abstinence. Invercargill has greatly prospered during the last few months. 1 welve mothers, representing 20 children, have signed the pledge. The homes are regularly visited, and a movement is on

foot whereby mothers and children may be taken to the seaside for a day’s outing. Petone held an afternoon for mothers and habit**. Address by Mrs A. R. Atkinson. Tariki has added 40 names, total 250. Onchunga, 55 on the roll. Informal pleasant afternoon gatherings have ben conducted monthly. Short addresses by visitors, songs and recitations, and afternoon tea. Ngaruawahia has 08 on the roll. A picnic over the Waipu River was enjoyed by a iiuiiilk:|’ of parents and friends Ngaire numbers 53 A picnic was held for the little ones and their friends and parents. Luncheon and tea were provided, speakers gave short addresses. Timaru 80, 41 additions. Grey mouth roll 22. Blenheim, 155 on the roll. Winch more, 5 on the roll. Nelson roll 83. Forty-four visits have been paid, cards sent. Tuakau have 68 names in Lower ami Upper Tuakau. Mothers seem anxious that their little ones should be numl>cred in our band. Visited 17 homes. Wanganui 51. (lave a tea party to the young children, who seemed to enjoy themselves very much. New Plymouth added 60 names for the year, total 138. £1 Is ltd was raised for the work, proceeds of an “ At Home.” Palmerston North, 60 on the roll Visits have l>een paid, cards and literature distributed. Waitara 12 on roll. Hawera 28. Upper Hutt 15 A large increase of cards has been distributed, about £lO for the year. Ibis Department is paying its way. The balance of I*4 odd is mortgaged, a large order for cards l>eing now in the printers’ hands A finer opening into the homes of those indifferent to the Temperance cause cannot lie imagined than through the children. L T,L. — Napier, 18 regular meetings have lieen heid in the Superintendent’s house; attendance from 15 to 30 members. Blutl Band of Hope, meml>ership 13'.1. Prizes were given at the close of the season for best attendance and for gaining new members. Collections amounted to £4 10s lsd ; £lO was the veiy excellent result of an *‘ American Evening held by the Band of Hope children. The effort was made for the purchase of a piano for the new hall.
