ENTERTAINING BAND CONTESTANTS.
(A Non-Departmental Work). The Ashburton Union entertained the visiting bandsmen, in connection with the band contests, in the Pavilion on the Domain Grounds during their stay in the town. It was a formidable task to provide hot breakfast, luncheon and tea for about 200 people, but the Union and its friends supplied the funds, and the capable President, Mrs. Lill. and her whiling band of helpers, carried out the programme successfully. The men were delighted, and asked “mother ” to come and look after them in the next town they visited. Mrs. Lill explained that it might not be safe for her bevy of girl helpers to do such work in a license town, whereupon the shout arose: “No-license for ever !” As a token of gratitude, Mrs. Lill was on one occasion seranaded by one band after another from 12 o’clock until 2 a.m.
