The White Ribbon: FOR GOD AND HOME AND HUMANITY. Thursday, November 15 1906. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION.
With <lu<- circumstance and jinnip was the Exhibition opened on November Ist. The repiesentati ve of royalty, the men entrusted with legislative powers, those enlisted in military service, the poet, the singers, the plavers upon stringed and wind instruments, ami tin* dames in beautiful or gorgeous habiliments one and all bore a brave part in the day’s show.
Though skies at first were grey and stormy, hearts went light, for had not the copious rains of t lit* preceding day and night ousted the fear of drought which had crept into many an overanxious heart and made the blue heavens appear hut as messenger of ill? And morning, noon, and night since that day have the crowds passed in and out, seeing in the fifteen acres which the great buildings cover, some of the creations of God’s noblest creature, man ; or examining specimens of Nature's own handiwork. Beautiful for situation is the Exhibition. Set in the midst of \erdant lawns, blooming flowers and leafy trees, encircled by the smoothly flowing stream, and having at night its outlines limned in glowing light. A liuuorless Exhibition is it, and the croakers whoso insulted the citizens of this and ther la. ds as to say that strong drink, and not Industry, Art or Nature, would attract, have had to drop their theme. An attendance of over 1 tSO,(HX) in eight clays the most sanguine had not dreamed of as possible—HH > persons passed the turnstiles on 9th November alone. One other feature, ton, may we note as evidence of the change in public sentiment with regard to Temperance. Our NX. W.C.T.U. President. Mrs. Cole, received an official invitation to be present at the opening ceremony. Assuredly the women of New Zealand handed together in the W.C.T.I . are now recognised as a force to he* reckoned with in the political world.
