NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Photographs for ink Exhibition.— Mrs Day asks us to acknowledge tin receipt by her of a number of photographs from N.Z. officers and superintendents of departments. Will those who have not yet sent theirs in please do so as promptly as possible, so that there may be no delay in arranging tin 1 groups for the Exhibition Kay. Keyond the Veil. —At the meeting of the ('hristehurch I'nion held on Sept. *2(ith, a resolution was passed expressing the deep sympathy of the members with Mrs Newton and Miss Gordon in the loss of their mother. The late Mr" Gordon had great sympathy with Temperance work. l*N FERMENTED WINK DEPARTMENT. A case reported in the daily papers last month is a most pertinent plea for the use of unfermented wine only in Churches. In tin* Magistrate’s Court, Grevtown, Iraia To Whaite and T. Williams were each fined for supplying Maori women with wine at the pa, Kapawai. It apj>ears that the tollunga was at the pa, and certain ceremonies of a more or less religious character were being performed, and tin* wine was administered as part of tin* Maori rite. After the case was over, the Maoris argued why should the Maori minister (Kev. .1. Williams) he able to administer wine, and these two not V Cnder the circumstances, they say they will not allow Mr \\ illiams to administer wine in tin* Sacrament at the pa in future. The Obscene Dost Card Evil. —Certain of ourN.Z. Magistrates are showing no slack hand in putting down the post card menace to morals. At the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on October .‘lrd, Mr V. G. Day sentenced a man charged with vending indecent |w>st cards to six months' imprisonment. Wanted—Women as City Coincii.lors. In two matters of the highest importance as regards health lias the Christchurch City Council shown itself woefully supine. The questions of municipal control of the milk supply, and of providing public sanitary convenience for women have both been shelved —the latter in face of the fact that the city will presently be full of Exhibition visitors. Such inaction is

little short of criminal. Of course, the obvious fact is that men alone should not Ik* entrusted to deal with these matters; both are specially within woman s domain. A Riuhteoi’s and Much-Needed Enactment. —The Premier has avowed his intention of bringing in a Kill at the earliest opportunity, making it illegal for a man to dispose of the homestead without the consent of his wile American Women and the Smoot Case. —When recording the fact, a few days ago, of the arrest in New York of tin* Mormon president, for |>olygamv, the Christchurch i*r(ss went on to remark that “ recently, as tin* result of an agitation by the women of America, a committee of the Senate decided that Senator Smoot was ineligible as a Mormon (polygamist) to sit in the Senate.” It is good to lind woman’s work thus acknowledged. To tin* W.C.T.U. women of America is due no small share of the credit for this iusistance of morality on the part of American legislators. Dunedin Y.W.C.A. —We have received a copy of the 28th annual re|>ort of tin* Dunedin Y.W.C.A., showing that many avenues of usefulness to young women have been entered u|»on. It is satisfactory to note that the large factories in tlie ‘ityand neighbourhood have been visited from time to time and efforts made to interest and influence the girls then*. The Caversham Industrial School has also received attention.
