The White Ribbon: FOR GOD AND HOME AND HUMANITY Tuesday, April 17, 1906. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Crowded Opt.—As readers will see, copy has again over-run our space. Much interesting matter, including the abstracts of reports of district and local unions, and some departmental reports have to wait until next month. A Uokgotea I’omal Note. The Business Manager has received a postal note hearing the Rongotea post-mark, but unaccompanied by name of sender. Will the Rongotea friend kindly forward particulars at the earliest possible date. 0 The W.C.T.I*. at the Exhibition.— Many of our readers are aware that arrangements are being made to have the W.C.T.L . represented at the coining Christchurch Exhibition. It is hoped in this way to bring before the pub!:, not only Temperance facts and statistics, but also very many of the other branches of work entered upon by the W.C.T.U. under its all-embracing I)oEverything policy. As will be readily seen, a splendid opportunity is offered for the* advocacy and furtherance of woman s work for humanity—an opportunity which it would be almost criminal to neglect. To worthily carry out the scheme means, of course, considerable expenditure ; undue economy will hut ensure failure of the object. We, however, feel perfectly sure that the Unions, always so ready and able to raise fundß for necessary work, will see to it that tiiose entrusted with the arrangements for the exhibit are not hampered or hindered by financial considerations. 0 As Educational Convention. A gratifying feature of the late Convention was the educational element. The

j)aj)ers written by Mesdamet* Dolirmann, M.A., and \Wlls on I boards of Control and Anti-Gambling, were enlightening, and the discussion on such subjects as food reform and hygienic dress could not be other than suggestive and helpful. business must of necessity be transacted, but it is surely a great waste of opportunity when such a company of women meet ami disjterse without a chance of sharing thought or experience on subjects in w hich all are or should he interested.

Neglected and Destitute Children

\ large and influential deputation, including representatives from the W.C.T.U., the W omen s Council, and several other organizations, waited on the Premier at Christchurch on April 10th, relative to the establishment of district boards of Control, elected biennially and by popular vote, each board to have the management and control in connection with the upbringing of all neglected and destitute children in its district. It was pointed out that money liberally and wisely expended on these children would be a sound economic investment, by making respectable and self-supporting adults of these who would otherwise remain through life a burden on, as well as a menace to, the State. Mr Seddon gave a lengthy but somewhat unsatisfactory reply, merely promising to lay the matter before his colleagues.

Talks to thk Yoi ng Folk. During her stay in Grey mouth, the Recording Secretary, Miss Moody bell, devoted two evenings to the young people, one to the girls, and one to boys and young men. On each occasion there was a large attendance, and a great deal of sound and helpful advice was given.

Miss Hughes.' —The many friends of Miss Hughes, our late organiser, and, last year, Superintendent of Work among Maoris, will be interested to hear that she has been engaged as organiser by the Victorian Alliance.
