Father Hays.

On his arrival at the Bluff on April th, Father Hays was very cordially

received by a local representative com mittee in the Drill Hall, at 9 a.m. l he meeting, which was well attended, was presided over by the acting Mayor (Dr. Torrance), who, in a most appropriate speech, welcomed Father Hays to the colony. Addresses were read and presented by Mrs Laishley, President of the W.C.T.U , and by Master Geo. Mackenzie, on behalf of the Band of Hope. A handsome bouquet of tlowers was presented by Miss Dorothy Laishley. Revs. A. Laishley and G. P. Hunt further welcomed Father

Hays and wished him every success in his mission. Father Hays replied thanking all for the very warm welcome extended to him, and expressing special gratification at the presence of the Band of Hope children, his one message to the patents being, “ Save the children. ’ About forty members of the Band of Hope sang three Temperance melodies during the meeting.

Father Hays has, since his arrival in the colony, spoken in various towns, Invercargill, Dunedin, Ashburton, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Greymouth anil Hokitika being among the number.

Everywhere he has met with a most cordial reception, and his hosts have included members of nearly all the religious denominations. A large number of pledges has been taken at each meeting.
