Educational Sub-Committee of the Women’s National Council.

The following is being sent by Mrs G. J. Ross, Lower Riccarton, Christchurch, to a number of individuals throughout the colony who are known to be especially, interested in the subject of Education. “ Christchurch, January, 1902. “ On behalf of the educational subcommittee of the National Council of the women of New Zealand, I have the h onour to enclose you the following list of questions, knowing you to be interested in the matter of education.” “ Will you kindly consider them and reply before March next ? “ I have the honour to be, “ Madam, “ Yours faithfully, “ J. G. ROSS, “for National Council.” Questions. 1. Are you in favour of establishing a .kindergarten Department in connection with the schools in the larger centres throughout the colony ? If so, at what age do you recommend that children should enter school? 2. Are you in favour of the abolition of the present pass system ? 3. Are you in favour of classification according to attainments in the various subjects taught ? 4. What test are you in favour of making before allowing children to pass out of the primary schools ? 5. Are you in favour of extending the school age to fifteen years ? 6. Are you in favour of the establishment of free, central, technical scho.is in each centre as part of our public school system ? 7. Are you in favour of making the schools of art free to children who hare attained a certain standard of proficiency in drawing f 8. What limit would you place on the number of children alloted to each teacher ?

9. Are you in favour of the abolition of the present pupil teacher system, under which injustice is often done to pupil teachers themselves, and whereby our children are intrusted to unskilled instructors?

10. Are you in favour of the University classes being made free to all primary and secondary school teachers ? 11. Are you in favour of free secondary education being extended to children who can qualify by test examination ? 12. Are you in favour of making a special suitable provision for the education of .he morally and mentally deficient children ? 13. Are you in favour of forwardirg the physical culture of our children by the establishment of gymnasia and the provision of ample spaces for recreation ? 14. Are you in favour of hot and cold baths being provided for our large public schools? 15. Are you in favour of no differentiation of salary being made on account of the sex of the teacher ?

16. Are you in favour of continuation evening schools for boys and girls to 17 years of age. for at least four evenings per week, providing free instruction, mainly technical ? 17. Are you in favour of introducing systematic moral instruction into N. 'A. schools on lines similar to of the “ Moral Instruction League of England ” ? ♦ -
