The White Ribbon: FOR GOD AND HOME AND HUMANITY Tuesday, March 15, 1898. Crossed The Bar.

During the present month Frances Willard, our “ World's "President; Sir James Stanstield, the friend of English women; and Professor Kirk, husband of one ot our Vice Presidents, and father of our New Zealand Recording Secretary have all left the “ River of Years ” for the fuller, broader ocean of God’s love.

MiSi Willard’s life was a beautiful example of what may be done by a noble woman. Intense and direct of purpose, she never degenerated into narrowness; leading a crusade against evils, she was ever filled with abundant charity towards evil doers. Many of her co-workers of a smaller nature found her incomprehensible, and were often disposed to censure htr. Her willingness to work hand in hand with Unitarians and Roman Catholics, her happy ability to see the possibilities of good in all soits and conditions of people, filled them with sur-picion. So easily do we forget that Christ was the fpend of al! sinners, and that his most harsh condemnations were given to the Pharisaical. Now that she has pass<d from our sight, we shall have a truer perception of that all she did, and shall better understand the bright and brave spirit of Frances Willard. Sik James Stansfield will l»e remembered with gratitude for his long and eminent services in connection with the repeal of tht English C.l>. Acts. Of high Parliamentary standing, and ol spotless integrity, his great in Hue nee was an immense help to the repeal movement. One of the most valuable pamphlets on the failure of these Acts was from his pen As a consistent advocate of the enfranchisement of women he will lie greatly missed in England. Professor Kirk was widely known for his scientific work. He was a Fellow of the Lin nan Society, and for o\er thirty years Ins la hours ns Curator ol the Auckland Museum, as a lecturer to the University, and as organiser of the Forestry Department have been of great service to the Colony. 11 is last work was the 4 Forest Flora of New Zealand," and at the time of Ins death he w*as engaged in piepaiing a •‘Students Flora " of New Zealand in private life Professor Kirk was of a most lovable and gentle disposition, full

of consideration for others, and with manners of a rare and old time courtliness Heartfelt sympathy will l»c fell for Mrs and Miss Kirk, as ’veil as for the other members of the liereavcd family.
