Notes on the Calendar

St. Matthew is an Apostle, an Evangelist, and a Martyr. We cannot be certain that the whole of the Gospel called after him was his work, but we may safely take it that ' those special features which endear , the book to us come from the public service clerk who was called to so high a place m the kingdom of God. It is right that we should have a day to call to mind the angels who by God's appointment "succour and defend us on earth." We ought to remember them more than we do, and that without the silly vagaries of Ratanaism. Every day this month from the 14th to the 20th, both inclusive, one or other of the. Ember week prayers ought to be used at Morning and Evening Prayer. If your Vicar omits them, ask him why. tft is true that our bishops generally find it convenient to hold their ordinations at some other season. But that seems no good ground for omitting prayer , for those who are to be ordained. The more prayers they and all clergy get, the better "that both by 'their life and doctrine they 'may set forth God's glory and set forward the salvation of all men." " " •
