Four Ember Seasons.

The Birthday of the Mother of our Lord ought to be remembered, though the Prayer-bopfc only gives the- date. > The Kevised Book has a Collect asking God that by the incarnation of His dear Son we may indeed be made nigh unto him. The Ember Days this month-are always the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday- after the 14th September, Holy Cross Day. The four Ember seasons spread throughout the year are meant to be special seasons of prayer for those about to be ordained. It would be better for the clergy and the whole Church if everybody observed them either privately or publicly and prayed for all who have been or soon will be ordained. St. Matthew had a rather different training from most of the Apostles. He was a publican, that is a clerk m the public service. As the publicans' business was to collect taxes for a hated foreign government they hada bad name. His Gospel is specially rich m reports of our Lord's teaching. * We owe to him our knowledge of the Sermon on the Mount. How many angels are named m the Bible? Can you answer that question? On September 29th we are rightly called on to thank God for their -.wonderful service and to pray that they may continue to succour and defend us. But only one is named— St. Michael. Of all God's creatures He has only given freewill to angels and to men. It is a very high honour, but a dangerous one.
