THE MODERN INQUISITOR.

The Modern Inquisitor. — A week or two ago, the writer was a passenger on board a coastal steamer. An elderly man came and sat by him, and without further ceremony plunged at once into the question: "Are you saved?" The writer's reply led to a long discussion, m the course of which the writer was warned that his righteousness, if any, was "but filthy rags," and that unless he could claim a certain emotional crisis m his religious life, he was "heading straight for hell." He & was further informed that there are two classes of men and women m the world — the saved and the unsaved — and that the latter class are doomed to an eternity of flaming fire. The spirit of the Spanish Inquisition is not quite extinct. Now that the awful tyranny of the past is out v of the question, there are still inquisitors who, after constituting themselves both judge and jury, find some satisfaction m at least passing the sentence of fire on those whose religious views do not please them. — Auckland Gazette.
