PERSONAL NOTES.

In Auckland there passed away recently the Rev. J. H. Hawkes, m his 90th yeai\ Mr Hawkes was born m Ireland and educated m Trinity College, Dublin. In 1879 he was ordained m Auckland by Bishop Cowie and m

1881 was appointed to the charge of the oldest Church m New Zealand,, that of Russell, m the Bay of Islands. He left Russell on his appointment to the Wharigarei High School, where he did voluntary work as a, clergyman, riding all over the surrounding country. In 1885 he was appointed to Kamo, where he worked until his retiremerit m 1908. During his ministry he rode over 70,000 miles, many of them under the most arduous conditions, and m his old age felt the effects of his many journeyings on horseback. The Bishop of Nelson has appointed the Yen. Archdeacon Kimberley as Vicar General of the Diocese; and Canon T. J. Smith* Vicar of Wakefield, to be Archdeacon of Waimea. The Rev. Canon Wilford, 8.D., Principal of College House, Christchurch, has resigned, and proposes to leave New Zealand at the end of this year. He is to be succeeded by the Rev. S. Parr, 8.D., Headmaster of the Cathedral Grammar School, Christchurch. . A pulpit is being erected m St. Mary's, Springston, as a memorial to Archdeacon Stocker, who built the church' in 1875. Wood from the old altar rails of St. Paul's, Tai Tapu, is being used, St. Paul's having been built by him y in 1878. The Rev. H. N. Roberts has accepted the cure of Cburtenay, m the Christchiirch diocese. The Rev. Waiter Hubert Baddeley, M.A., M.C., D.5.01, Vicar of, South Bank, Yorkshire, has been appointed to be Bishop of Melanesia. He sails froria England m October to join the Mission.
