BOARD OF MISSIONS

"Century" Parishes. — During the past financial year 50 parishes and parochial districts sent m more than £100 to the Board's work. This is a higher number of "Century" parishes than m any previous year. Nelson Cathedral with £594 headed the list. Then follow Havelock North with £428, and Tunara with £320. No lass than eleven others exceeded ,£2OO. Regular Contributions. — Unless parishes adopt some regular method of

obtaining arid' forwarding their missionary contributions the different coordinated missions are inconvenienced by having to rely on an overdraft. The Bqard passed tie following resolution at the Annual Meeting : "Every parish should take into consideration the need of securing and remitting quarterly one-fourth of its quota, with a view to enabling the Board to fulfil its commitments regularly, and so avoiding eleventh-hour efforts". It is hoped that this may not >be merely a pious resolution but that it will be given serious consideration by all vestries. Bishop Steward.— The following resolution was enthusiastically passed by the Board at its Annual Meeting: "The N.Z. Board of Missions places on record its appreciation of tihe work of the Right Rev. J. M. Steward, both: as a Missionai'y Priest and Bishop m the Melanesiau Mission for over a quarter of a century, and expresses to him the gratitude of the Church for his selfdenying and devoted service m the evangelisation of the Pacific." Looal Chinese Mission.— Mr Wong, who is a Graduate of St. Paul's College • Hons: Kong, and' also of the Theological College, Canton, where he studied for four years, has been appointed the new Missioner to work amongst the Chinese m the Wellington and Hawke's Bay Provinces. The Roy. E. V P. Lee speaks very highly of Mr Wpng ;i He speaks English. Melanesian Finance.— The Board of Missions at its Annual Meeting found .tihat it was not at present possible to act upon the resolution of General Synod urging that the N.Z. Church should aim at increasing Melanesia's Budget by £2000. It is imperative that more money should be found fo' 1 Melanesia, as for the current year the English Committee is giving £2000 less than last year to the General Fund of the Mission. The Board of Missions whilst unable to increase 'Melanesia's Budget this year is makng a special grant of £600 from the credit balance that it had on June 30, and hopes to be m a position to make another grant of the same amount next June. Jerusalem Conference.— The Rev. David Oalder, the N.Z. Secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, has returned to the Dominion. The National Missionary Council of N.Z. hopes that it may be possible for both Mr Calder and the Rev. D, C. Herron —the other repreentative at the Conference—to address meetings m various centres. The Conference has an" important message for all Christian people, and it is felt that the best way of communicating this message to our

Dominion is rot v tihe tiro New Zealand repTesentatnfeVto give it m person. A Great Churchman.— Dr. Eu&ene Stock who died at Bournemouth on September 9, at the advanced age of 92, was one of the greatest authorities m the world on the subject of Christian Missions. He rendered yeoman service to the Anglican Communion m many ways, but his chief work was as a Secretary of the Qhurch Missionary Society. The excellent quality of pres-ent-day missionary magazines is largely due to the high standard set by Dr. Stock when he was Editorial Secretary of the. C.M.S. As a result of his visit to this Dominion m 1892, when he was accompanied by the Rev. R. W. Stewart who was afterwards murdered m Qhina, the N.Z. Church Missionary Society was formed.
