IN MEMORIAM.

On April 24th, at her beautiful home overlooking the Pacific, there passed to her rest at the age of 76 the beloved wife of the late Mr W. M. Newman. Mrs Newman arrived m Napier m the year 1870 and since then has been one of the most respected and loved members of the Church of England. During the early days she much endeared herself to the Maoris, who always found m her an understanding and sympathetic friend. But not only to the Maori did she prove a friend m time of need, for it was her custom to tell all that her door would never be closed to those who needed help, and for years, through the troublous times of those early days, her front door was never seen to be closed, day or night. To one whose work lies with the poor she offered most generous help, but on one condition, viz., that her name should not be disclosed ; and the same unostentatious spirit Avas shown m all that she did. The sympathy of her many friends, goes out, as the Dean said m his reference to her m the Cathedral, not only to her daughter Mrs Oxford, and relatives, but to the poor sick and suffering who lost m her a generous friend.
