The Rev. J. H. Squire, a London Nonconformist minister, told a story at a Plymoutli meeting recently of Sir John French. He was some years ago m a railway carriage m which some military officers were discussing- the question : Who was the better strategist, Wellington or Napoleon ? They were not agreed, and put the question to a superior officer who entered the compartment. The officer said Napoleon was the better strategist. " But how could that be, seeing that Wellington won che battle of Waterloo ? " " God won the battle of Waterloo," was the unhesitating reply, and the officer who made it was Sir John French. ;
