Aitken (treasurer of the League) and others, the fallowing resolution was carried ; unanimously : — *» The Executive of the Bible m Schools' League, having received : from Canon Garland intimation of his resignation of the position of Organising Secretary to the League, regretfully agree to accept the same. • In doing so they would place on record an expression of high appreciation of th/ work done by Canon Garland who devoted himself to the furtherance, of the movement with .a tireless enthusiasm ; and m the discharge of the delicate and difficult duties involved m his leadership displayed a . skill and wisdom which marked him out as preeminently worthy of the trust and esteem always felt for him by the Executive. It is only right to add that the arrest the movement has suffered has been m no respect due to any defect on Canon Garland's part. The outbreak of the war, which affected every interest m the British Empire, put an end as is well known for some time to the active prosecution of our campaign; and it is hardly open to question that but for this and other hindrances due to the same cause the issue mi?ht have been crowned with success.. The Executive desire to emphasise the fact that a large number of members of Parliament — nearly onehalf — were returned pledged to vote m favour of the Referendum!, a number which, but for the circumstances under which the election was held, might easily have been a decided majority."
