S. Augustine's, Napier.

Vicar: Rev. Canon Tzike. Curate: Jiev. 0. L. lt r ilw>t. During January, the. holiday month, there has been but little to chronicle. The heat has been excessive, and this, with so many parishioners being absent on holiday, has mada the Sunday attendances very indifferent. The Choir, though smaller than usual, has rendered the Church music very well, and when the Sundays .have been so unusually hot, it is not an easy matter m a overheated building, to sing as brightly as the Choir has sung all through the holiday season. . Three or four boys with good voices should apply to join the Choir now, and some more lady sopranos and a few men are needed. Mr. H. L. Harston will be glad to see them personally first. The annual Sunday school outing will (D.V.) be held on the 29th (be fore this issue sees the light) . We hope to have donations from' all the parents and many of the congregation. It takes a large sum to> provide for all the . children, and there are the book prizes to be bought as well. Mr. T. M. Lawlor, of Hastings, our former Superintendent, most generously sent us a subscription for the first boy and girl m the year's marks. The children will not. soon forget their old friend, who so often, has remembered them. During the wedding festivities at Te-Hoe, Alfredton, • where the Vicar celebrated the marriage of Mr. Edward' Gaisford to Miss Rita Kebbell,

the news of the appalling and fatal accident which resulted .m the death of Mrs. Frank Gordon, was announced. Needless to say what a gloom it. has cast over the. whole province, and expressions of deepest sympathy are everywhere being offered to the bereaved ones. . At their request, the Viicar assisted m the burial service at the Havelock cemetery, where, amid that most pathetic scene, prayers were offered from every heart for the husband and his children. The late Mrs. Gordon was rightly beloved by so many who. had experienced her thoughtful kindness. Owing 'to the boat arrangements being, upset m Wellington, our- delegate (Mr. Burt) to the . C.E-M.S. Conference m Nelson was unable to get further than ' the Empire City. We regret this as much as Mr. Burt, to whom it was a . great disappointment. - ■•'•.■•'■ ■ ' The deepest sympathy of all parishioners will go out to Mrs. Smith, whose husband suddenly died- last week, and whose eldest daughter Lily succumbed to typhoid a few days, after m Petohe. Mr. Smith's death was most unexpected. ' H|e had only finished the contract for the Church aisle ' lately, and. had always done his work on Church and school buildings faithfully arid conscientious^. He was a very active man, and none of his many friends ever thought he had . valvular heart trouble, which ended so suddenly his life here. His daughter, who was ai regular Communicant, had grown up amongst us, and was much liked and respected by a large circle of young friends: Her death so soon after her father's has come as a terrible shock, for we only knew the day before her death that typhoid had intervened. Her mother and sisters will have the earnest prayers of all, and when we recall that Mrs. Smith's only son was drowned a few years ago, and his body was never recovered, our hearts are ' truly grieved for our neighbour and parishioner, who is held m very high respect. Another sad death has to be recorded. The eldest boy of Mr. and Mrs Murrow, Havelock road, after lincxering for five weeks, succumbed to ° his accident with a pea rifle. Much sympathy is extended to the sorrowing- parents and famity.. BAPTISMS. Gladys Naomi Bond. Quentin Willoughby Pitt. Keith William Atkins. Nellie Mabel Gray. Geoffrey Leslie Long.
