Vellington (K-60-38, 50 iu:p.), 1979 and Kraistcherch (K-59-130 iu.p.), 1978. [Moscow?] : [General'nyi shtab?]. A Wellington and a Christchurch map from a series of maps of cities from around the world, produced by the Soviet government. The series comprises military topographies showing numbered government, military, transportation and industrial facilities. Purchase.

Artist unknown. [Miniature portrait of Charles Emilius Gold, c. 1890]. Oil on ivory. A head-and-shoulders miniature of General Charles Emilius Gold, KCB in his later years. He wears his red military jacket, gold and red sash, and medal. Donation.

Barnes, Frank, 1895-1981. NZHS Maheno, HMS New Zealand and NZHS Marama. 1915. Oil on board. Three vignettes of World War One ships at sea: the Maheno in its hospital colours, framed by rope with a Red Cross flag and a garland including fern and kanuka; the New Zealand, framed by rope, with a Union Jack and the British white ensign and a garland including pdhutukawa; and the Marama in its hospital colours, also framed by rope with a Red Cross flag and a garland including fern and manuka. Forrester, Alfred Avery, 1895-1981. ANZAC Cove [Gallipoli]. 1918. Oil on canvas. Shows the landing place at Gallipoli for New Zealand troops. A pier is in the foreground, with boats in the cove. On land, roads lead into the hills, and an encampment has been made up from the water's edge, showing dugouts and tents. According to Forrester's daughter, Alfred did not go to Gallipoli; the scene was more likely painted from a photograph taken by his brother. Purchase.

Fullwood, Albert Henry, 1863-1930. Wellington, N.Z. Parliament Houses. [1904]. Watercolour on paper. Shows the back of Parliament Buildings looking downhill along Sydney Street West. Figures in the scene include men, women, dogs, someone riding a bike and a horse and carriage. Purchase.

Hoyte, John Barr Clark, 1835-1913. [Golden Crown Stamper Battery, Golden Crown Street, Thames, c. 1868], Watercolour on paper. A view of the stamper battery established on the Golden Crown claim in Thames, about 1868, featuring a singlestorey building with a tall chimney. Other smaller buildings, likely to be miners' dwellings, and roadways are on the hills behind. Purchase.

Marsh, Edith Ngaio (Dame), 1895-1982. A New Zealand sawmill [l92os?]. Oil on canvas on board. Shows the interior of a sawmill, with a large tree trunk being cut lengthways. The painting was exhibited at the Wembley World Exhibition, London, in 1924. Purchase.

McFarlane, Shona, 1930-2001. [Selfportrait]. 1972. Oil on board. A half-length frontal self-portrait of the artist, aged about 32. Purchase.

Nairn, Francis Edward, 1819-1910. Tarawera from Turangakumu. 1879. Oil on canvas. A view from the Turangakumu Road summit, off the modern Napier-to-Taupo road, looking across a plain towards the settlement of Tarawera. Nairn lived for a time in the Hawke's Bay Region. The style is European Romantic, with three figures, probably Maori, placed in the foreground. Purchase.

Oliver, Richard Aldworth ,1811-1889. Fanny Weller, a half-caste girl, Otago. [1850?]. Watercolour and gouache on paper. Shows an identified young Maori woman, a gourd in her right hand. Her upper garment is draped to expose her right breast and she wears a long skirt and a shark's-tooth ear adornment. Purchase.

Oliver, Richard Aldworth. [View of Hardwicke, Erebus Cove] Port Ross, Auckland Islands. Dec Ist [lß]so. Watercolour on paper. Shows a rare, early view of the ill-fated whaling station known as Hardwicke, in Port Ross on Auckland Island. Purchase.

Swainson, William, 1789-1855. Entrance to the second valley. Taine's section. 27 October 1847. Pencil on paper. Shows two men fishing on the banks of the Hutt River. The river winds to the left of the scene, with the hills of the gorge rising either side. Taine's section' refers to the land owned by James John Taine (1817-1914), who resided in the Hutt until about 1847. Purchase.

Wilson, Laurence William, 1851-1912. Hut on the Routeburn Track, Lake Wakatipu. 1895. Watercolour on board. An early view of the Great Walk, established for sightseers in the 1880 s. There are trees in the foreground, with a track leading to a wooden house or hut that has a thatched roof and a stone chimney. Shows a man working outside, either chopping wood or digging a garden. In the background rise snow-peaked mountains, possibly part of the Humboldt Range. Purchase.

Comprises autobiographical accounts of Emery's experiences living in India in the early 20th century, travel diaries of trips to North and South America and Tahiti, drafts of unpublished adventure novels set in India, and annotated copies of his two published novels, Tiger of Baragunda and The Luck of Udaipurl. Hayman family, 1915-1988. Papers. 1948-2012. 0.58 m. Papers of Patrick and Barbara Hayman, including original drawings, exhibition catalogues, correspondence, notes and poems. Patrick Hayman was born in England but spent his formative years as a painter in New Zealand. In 1950, he married Barbara Judson, a former ballet dancer. Purchase.

Johnson, Ralph, 1950- Papers, 19451948, 1980-1987. 0.5 m. Records of the Town and Country Players relating to its activities, and letters between Ralph's parents while his father, Neil Johnson, was with the Friends' Ambulance Unit. Neil gives detailed descriptions of life in China in the aftermath of World War Two, the emerging civil war, and of life in Calcutta during the partition crisis. Donation.

Kirkpatrick, Brownlee Jean, 1919-2007. Papers relating to Katherine Mansfield, 1888-2007. 2.15 m. 17 boxes, 102 folders/volumes. Research papers relating to Kirkpatrick's research for A Bibliography of Katherine Mansfield (Oxford: Clarendon, 1989). Collection comprises correspondence, research papers, annotated publications, and ephemera relating to Mansfield. Purchase. Ledger, James J., 1847-1907. 1 vol. Detailed memoir of Ledger, titled In Search of a Home in the Antipodes. Memoir features illustrations (six black-and-white photographs; 35 sepia ink sketches; and photographs). The narrative primarily concerns Ledger's immigration to New Zealand in 1878, his four years in New Zealand, and subsequent relocation to Melbourne in 1882. Some of the latter parts of the volume relate to events in Ledger's life up to f 893. He was involved with the military at Parihaka in 1881. Purchase.

Levick, Edith Audrey Mayson, 1890-1980. One autograph album belonging to Edith Audrey Beeton containing c. 185 entries from 1908-18, including the period when she was a nurse during World War One at the St George's Hill Auxiliary Hospital, Weybridge, England. Ward, John Patrick, 18477-1914. Papers, 1865-1909. 0.05 m. Ward's accounts of his involvement in the New Zealand Wars, 1865-72. Includes descriptions of a soldier's life and the skirmishes and battles he was active in; an account of a court martial during General Whitmore's Ruakaturi [Ruakituri] campaign and a description of Major Von Tempsky. Also literary drafts for chapters relating to encounters with Maori during the New Zealand Wars and correspondence between Ward and Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward (1908) relating to Old Soldiers' Claims. Includes one issued by the Mobil Record Club and featuring Paul Gilmore, winner of the 1957 Mobil Song Quest. Musicards were designed to be played only once or twice. Donation.

Niagara News, 14 June 1940. A wireless newspaper printed and published aboard the Niagara by the Pacific Wireless Press Agency. This is the paper's final issue. Five days after it was produced, the Niagara, having just left Auckland struck a mine laid by the German cruiser Orion off Bream Head, Whangarei and sank. No lives were lost, but a secret and large consignment of gold from the Bank of Engfand went down with the ship. The gold was payment from the UK to the USA for munitions supplies. Purchase.

Lebanese Community in Wellington Oral History Project (2009-14). 13 interviews by Marina Fontein, including two with Lebanese-born immigrants, about community life, businesses and culture in Wellington in the second half of the twentieth century. Manapouri Hydro Scheme 1964-1972 Oral History Project (2011-15). if interviews by Rosemary Baird with workers on the large and complex hydro scheme, including migrant workers, and five interviews with wives and family members of workers. NERF Nursing Oral History Project 19505/1960s (2012-14). 60 interviews with nurses trained in the 1930 s and 1960 s about their education and subsequent professional lives, and covering a range of material, from daily routines to the extensive changes in nursing during their working lives . Commissioned by the New Zealand Nursing Education and Research Foundation and carried out by a project team from the University of Auckland - Professor Linda Bryder, Dr Debbie Dunsford, Dr Kate Prebble and Associate Professor Margaret Horsburgh.
