Acquisitions of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture are listed selectively in the Turnbull Library Record to alert scholars to newly-acquired material judged to be of research value. Only original works and significant engravings and prints are included; photomechanical reproductions recently published are excluded.

artist unknown. [Homestead in the Rai Valley, ca 1870] Watercolour. An isolated farm homestead surrounded by cleared hillsides, beside the Rai Stream, on the road to French Pass. The watercolour may be the work of Marlborough surveyor Henry Handiside (1831-1877). purchase. artist unknown. New Zealand Company’s ship, for New Plymouth, Nelson, Wellington and Otago. Plan of the accommodations of the splendid ship Kelso. London, 1849. Engraving with letterpress. A rare ship plan showing the poop and cabin accommodation for one of New Zealand’s early immigrant ships. Handwritten annotations link the plan to a mutiny aboard the ship in 1850, on a later voyage from England to Hong Kong, purchase.

[Bullock dray being driven along a track through New Zealand bush, ca 1867] Watercolour. Purchased as an unidentified work, this watercolour has subsequently been identified as the work of surveyor, artist and goldminer F.E. Naim, and is likely to show a densely-bushed track on the road to Collingwood, Nelson Region, purchase.

nicholson, maria, fl. 1859-1862. [House in Nelson tenanted by Bishop Hobhouse, Christ Church Cathedral and a view of Nelson, 1860 or 1861] 9 ink drawings. Seven drawings of Bishop Hobhouse’s residence and garden in Grattan Street, Nelson, with considerable detail explained on an accompanying plan, with a drawing of Nelson cathedral and a distant view of Nelson township. The drawings are either the work of Mrs Mary Hobhouse, or of the Hobhouse family governess, Maria Nicholson, donation: Mrs A.D. Payne, Dorset, England.
