Notes on Accessions to the Manuscripts and Archives Collection

A Selective List of Acquisitions, July 1996 to June 1997

A selection of manuscripts and archives acquisitions is listed in the Turnbull Library Record to alert researchers to newly acquired material judged to be of significant research value. Additions to existing collections are not usually listed, except where they add substantially to what is already held. Microfilm material produced by the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau and the Australian Joint Copying Project has also not been included. New accessions for the Archive of New Zealand Music are listed in Crescendo, the bulletin of the International Association of Music Libraries (New Zealand Branch). For access to newly acquired collections the Library would welcome notification that access will be sought, preferably with an indication of a likely date. This will help staff in establishing priorities in processing collections.

bliss, Charles h. Papers relating to his life and work, 1938-1996. 42cm. donation. Bliss was a surgeon with the Indian Army during World War II working in Africa and India and emigrated to New Zealand in 1947. The papers reflect his interests in surgery, philosophy and art, and include diaries, journals and autobiography.

brandon family. Papers, 1840-1992. 60cm. donation: Mr T. C. Brandon, Wellington. The collection includes correspondence, legal documents and financial records for the Brandon family of Wellington, including their legal affairs. chan, Lionel lai-hung. Papers, 1930-1980. lm. donation: Mr Danny Chan, Wellington. Chan was secretary of the New Zealand Chinese Growers Association and editor of their journal. These papers, mostly in Chinese, reflect these interests.

The autobiography of Crane who worked as a teacher in New Zealand and the Pacific, and was imprisoned during World War II as a conscientious objector. davis family. Davis, and letters from his son, Jack, serving in Gallipoli and France.

The deed, in English and Maori, relates to compensation paid to Golden Bay Maori for land acquired in 1839 and subject to investigation by Commissioner Spain. These papers comprise notebooks recording his observations, transcripts of his journal, and letters collected by him relating to New Zealand scientists and science.

foote, Oliver nelson paul. Wartime diaries and papers, 1916-1919. 3cm. donation: Ms Cecily McNeill, Wellington. Foote served as a sapper in World War I and became a member of the Tui Pierrots. These papers include diaries and clippings relating to his war service. frame, janet. Letters from Frank Sargeson, 1977-1978. donation. Two letters to Frame from Sargeson commenting on mutual literary interests and friends. Restricted.

furkert, Frederick william. Papers, 1917-1949. 13cm. donation: Miss Ursula Furkert, Wellington. The papers include correspondence, photographs, maps and reports relating to Furkert’s public service appointments and surveys, and work during World War II when he was in charge of construction of military mobilisation and training camps in New Zealand. gleeson, francis Joseph. Diary, 1930. 1 volume, donation: Mrs M. Penrice, Waikanae. Gleeson was a New Zealand policeman posted to Samoa during the Mau disturbances. This diary is a record of his travels around Samoa while he was off-duty during March, 1930.

gooch family. Diary and papers, 1860-1940. 1 folder, donation: Mr Dick Gooch, Arizona, USA. Gooch served during the East Coast-Bay of Plenty campaigns. His letter, in the form of a diary, describes troop movements, the state of the principals involved and discusses Maori involvement in the fighting. gray, james dunbar. Travel diary, 1926. 1 volume, donation: Mr M. Blundell, Masterton. Diary kept while Gray was with the Department of External Affairs and Cook Islands. It records official tours of the Cook Islands, Samoa and Fiji.

green, edward lister. Papers, 1843-1869. 10cm. donation: Mr Andrew Nation, Waipawa. Green served with the Napier Militia in the late 1860 s; these papers include his diaries while serving with the British Army in Cape Province, India and China. hall-jones, william (sir). Papers, 1893-1936. lm. donation: Mr T S B Browne, Waikanae. Hall-Jones was a Cabinet Minister, a High Commissioner in London and member of the Legislative Council. The papers reflect his political career but also include some private papers and correspondence.

herries family. Further papers, 1881-1296. 1 8cm. purchase. The collection comprises a diary and letter of William Herbert Herries who visited New Zealand in 1881, correspondence between Robert S. Herries and William, their mother (1893-1894), and other family papers. holt, Barbara. Diary of a New Zealand holiday, 1935-1936. 1 volume, purchase. Holt wrote her account in the 1960 s from her diary and letters written home.

HUMANIST SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND. Records, 1969-1996. 4m. DONATION. The collection includes minutes, membership and financial records, files relating to projects, gatherings and seminars, with some branch records.

johnston, Andrew. Papers, 1993-1996. 15cm. donation. Comprises drafts and correspondence relating to his How to Talk and The Sounds published collections of poems. king, michael. lee, Robert. Memoirs of an early educator and other papers, 1937-1962. 5 folders, donation: Mrs Sheila Natusch, Wellington. The unpublished autobiography of Lee, a 19th-century education official, with papers relating to his career. He was an inspector with the Wellington Education Board. Log of the Proceedings of HMS Havannah, 1848-1851. 4cm. 1 volume, purchase. The log was kept by several people on a voyage from Sheerness to New Zealand via the Cape of Good Hope. The Havannah visited several places in New Zealand and Australia, often more than once.

luxford, nola. Further papers, 1920-1967. 20cm. donation: Estate ofNola Luxford. Luxford was well known as an expatriate actress, broadcaster and ANZAC club founder in the United States. strewe, Friedrich georg theodor (odo). Papers, 1908-1986. 2 m. donation: Mr Oliver Strewe, Bondi Beach, Australia. Strewe arrived in New Zealand from Germany in 1938. During World War II he was interned on Somes Island. Later he worked as journalist, landscape gardener and architect. He wrote poetry, plays and short stories and was a political activist; his papers reflect his involvement in all these areas.
