UNDERWORLD Second Toughest in the Infants
(Junior Boys Own) Awesome. If, like me, you own and love a battered copy of dubnobasswithmyheadman (hell, the scratches in the vinyl just improve the overall sound), you’ll be waiting for this, their second album. Mostly it sounds like you’d expect it to: dirty, hypnotic rhythms that build and build, the druggy, stream of urban consciousness lyrics of Karl Hyde, and that underlying rock ’n’ roll attitude (must be those guitars). As well as the gritty techno tracks, there is ambient drum ’n’ bass (‘Banstyle’), Chemical Brothers-on-speed-style hammering break beats (‘Rowla’), and a couple of poetic ambient excursions. Very hard to sum up in a couple of paragraphs, but take my word for it, this is good and proper dance music and there will be no singles released off the album, so buy it!
