Hard on the heels of the 70s Disco Revival comes the 80s Funk Revival! The first Retro party, held Queens Birthday weekend attracted approximately 800 people. While the original Retro party was supposed to be a nostalgic look back at the 80s club scene, on the night itself the crowd went crazy and all manner of crap was played. Some of the music was so bad that organiser Nick D’Angelo quickly realised where the money was, and promises even more trash this time round for Retro 2.

“The original Retro was supposed to be a one-off affair,\ but the ‘buzz’ was so good on the night everyone was demanding another one. Frankly some of the music everyone was getting off on was absolute shite, but as a former DJ that sort of thing has never surprised me. I have fond memories of the 80s, but perhaps it was a load of rubbish after all!”

For the second Retro, D’Angelo is promising even more DJs (Jon Davis has been added to the previous line-up of Manuel Bundy, Sample Gee and Sam Hill) and a breakdance floor show. “I’m on the hunt for a crew right now, it’s coming back y’know” says D’Angelo. In keeping with the 80’s club tradition there will also be a fashion show at midnight, courtesy of the Booty fashion store.

DEAD FLOWERS, Home CD Single (Wildside) 'Home' is a great choice for a single — immediately appealing but complex enough to grow on you with each listen. It storms out of the blocks, propelled magnificently by a kicking guitar performance from Riqi Hadfield, a violent drum rhythm and a strong pop vocal. ‘Another Day’ was recorded during the Sweetfish sessions and should’ve made it on to the album as it’s an inspired rocker also. The final track ‘Anyway’ is the delicate vocal debut of drummer Rob Dollars. THE BATS, Spill The Beans CD EP (Flying Nun) Flying Nun’s longest serving band return with a five-track EP that mostly covers well trodden territory. The title track is the pick of the bunch and a classic example of the Bats in a romantic mood. Elsewhere ‘Make It Clear’ resembles the Chills circa The Lost EP, while the guitar and vocals-only track, ‘Give In To the Sands’, is pretty listening. SHONA LAING, Kickback CD Single (Sony) Shona returns with more of the same. What this means is her voice is in its usual fine condition but the pop accompaniment on ‘Kickback’ still has that cheesy late 80s synthesiser sound to it. ‘American Friends’ is a lovely instrumental that features an answerphone message dropped in the middle and ‘Man With Wild Name’ plus New On Earth’s ‘Mercy Of Love’ round things off. GRACE, Confessions CD Single (Deepgrooves) This is quite a departure from the style of the last Grace single. ‘Confessions’ is a very hushed, moody, reflective song. Without wanting to disparage the smooth production, it’s more a vehicle for the impressive voice of Jason loasa. THE MUTTONBIRDS, Ngaire CD Single (Virgin) Nice pop chorus in the title track but lines like “I’ve seen a lot of new shoes today” make you wonder if Don’s running out of fresh vocal ideas. ‘Queen’s English’ is a one riff, sample infested jumble that’s interesting ‘cause it’s different from the norm. ‘A Man And A Woman’, a tale of infidelity, sounds suspiciously like a filler. FIGURE 60, Six Days On The Road 7 Inch Single (Crawlspace) Always a band to keep their word, Figure 60 have finally delivered the promised piece of black vinyl. ‘A gem’ is probably two suitable words to describe it. ‘Six Days’ is not a Charley Pride cover but a rolling, shambolic jamlike number engulfed in understated distortion. On the Bside ‘Stoned Loser' is a vocally tuneless but nonetheless melodic pop tribute (“you’re so dumb" is as good a put-down as any) and the drawn out ‘Dumb Blue’ sounds like they played it stoned. Yeah, a gem. BUNGALOW, Lurex 7 Inch Single (Rage Noise)

This has been out a wee while now. It's one of those Geraldine pressings so the quality is a bit dodgy, but it can’t detract from a good song and Lurex contains two. Both are quiet, unassuming pop numbers, but edging towards a more demented feel vocally on ‘Grey Cortina.’ Also included is a great comic by Trace Hodgson. PUREST FORM, Message To My Girl CD Single (Madame X)

numbers a great many, Neil Finn’s ‘Message to my Girl’ was always a special one. Here Purest Form give it the extra-slow ballad treatment and it’s annoying to the point of trauma. Also tossed in is the Rainbow’s End theme tune for which they should be held eternally accountable. JOHN RUSSELL ..
