New Tasmanian Industries

Tt is officially stated that contracts have been let and are now in progress for the erection of the various buildings required for the carbide factory of the Hydro-Electric Power and Metallurgical Co. Ltd., Tasmania. The company has also accepted tenders for the principal portion of the* plant. With the exception of the transformers (which have to be imported), the whole of the plant is being made in Australia. Provided that there is no unexpected delay in the delivery of any of the machinery, the carbide works should be completed and ready for the application of the electric power supplied by the State hydro-electric plant at the end of nine or ten months. The works are being erected on the company's land at North-West Bay, about 14 miles south of Hobart. It is the intention of the company to push on with the carbide works as quickly as possible, and, thereafter, with the first unit of the electrolytic zinc works (Gillies patent).
