Auckland Architectural Students’ Association

The Auckland Architectural Student’s Association referred to in our last issue is now fully organised, and held its third general meeting of the members on June 29th in the Association’s Room, Victoria Arcade. Students outside Auckland will be interested in this Association and with the idea of assisting them to form a like Association in the main centres, we give the following details sent us by the Secretary. “The Association has been formed with the express purpose of facilitating the studies of architectural Students in Auckland, principally in design, although measured drawing, out door sketching &c., will form branches of the Association, Besides this, lectures will be given to the members on subjects of interest. Designs are prepared by members in the following manner:An architect of ability is approached

and asked to set a subject for competition and act as visitor to the Association while the members are engaged on the working of the problem in hand. At present the members are engaged on a design for “A Bath House in a Thermal District,” set by Mr. N. Bamford A.R.1.8.A., who gave a most interesting address on his subject prior to its commencement. ■ ! | , Designs may be prepared cither in the Association’s Room or at home as the members may choose. One night a week is especially set apart for the discussion of the designs by the visitor, and at this meeting all members are expected to be present. Mr. Bamford, visitor for first subject for competition, has frequently been at the Association’s room, and has given the members great help in the preparation of their designs. There can be no doubt that such Associations as the Auckland one would be a great benefit to the students of New Zealand generally, and this Association is hoping to see others started, for great benefits would be derived from inter-city competitions. For instance, how often is such a subject as a Bath House in a Thermal District met with in every day practice? It means that students would make a study of certain classes of buildings for every design set. Great advantages too would be derived in designing in a certain style, viz:—A Club House in the manner of Italian Renaissance, or a power station in Byzantine style. Above all an architectural atmosphere is created and not only do the members see all the latest books and architectural plates, but one is able to meet his fellow students and discuss the general topics ot architecture. The following are the officers of A.A.S.A.: — President: Mr. W. H. Glimmer A.R.1.8.A., Vice Presidents: Messrs. Tims. Mahoney, N. Bamford A.R.1.8.A., H. S. Morran A.R.1.8.A., D. B. Patterson. Hon. Secretary: H. L. Massey, Hon. Treasurer :A. B. Millar. Committee : Messrs. R. B. Owen, E. Le Petit, A. Morgan. The membership of the Association now stands at 20. The members of the Auckland Association would ' be pleased to give other students thinking of forming similar associations any information which might be of use to them H. L. Massey, Honorary Secretary. We eongatulate the Auckland Students on this move for the uplift of our young architects. We understand they are responsible themselves for the organisation of the Association, and they have alC ready got a room in Victoria Arcade with a few - benches in, and have set to work in a thoroughly businesslike method to help themselves to better things. It is a most encouraging sign for the future of Architecture in New Zealand, and if they stick together will surely be able to do something towards the betterment of things Architectural when they take their places among the practising architects and can see their own ideas taking tangible shape in the form of wholesome bricks and mortar!
