Acclimatisation and Sport

English Birds.

, Ducks and Partridges. ■■ ■ \ A large consignment of English wild > duck (Mallards) left Auckland for Cambridge on March 7. These birds were presented by Mr. C. A. Whitney to the Waikato Acclimatisation Society, who will distribute them in due course. ' This is the third lot sent out during Marchaltogether, Mr. Whitney has over 100 of these birds to distribute this year. The Mallards laid exceptionally well daring last spring, 420 eggs being obtained and 96 per cent, of these were fertile, but, unfortunately, a number of the early ducklings were lost during a spell of very unfavourable weather. During the spring of last year over 300 eggs were distributed gratis amongst various acclimatisation societies and friends in the Auckland province, which brings the total eggs distributed to date to 900, and the number of mallards liberated to over 400. Mr. Whitney has retained 12 ducks for breeding purposes next year, and is exchanging drakes this month with the Southland Acclimatisation Society and Mr. H. R. Benn, of Okareka, near Rotorua, so as to avoid interbreeding. Satisfactory reports have been received from various parts stating that the duck are doing well, and in many instances have become quite wild, and joined the grey duck in. its native haunts, and it is to be hoped sportsmen and others will refrain from shooting these birds until they are fully acclimatised, and have been duly gazetted as open for shooting. There is a penalty of £lO for each of these birds shot, killed, or taken. Although some of those who received eggs were unsuccessful, the majority were most successful, hatching 60 per cent, of the eggs and rearing more than half of the birds then hatched, so that the work of acclimatising these splendid birds should go along apace next season. Major Whitney reared over 40 at him home near Waiwera, and Mr. A. L. Wilson, of Remuera, was also successful in rearing a number. It is to be regretted that St. John's Lake, which is set apart as 'a duck and game sanctuary, is only one by name, and that shooting has been going on early in the morning for the last six or eight weeks. All the English wild duck liberated on this lake years ago were shot off within six weeks after they were liberated, and there are very few grey duck to be seen on it now. Where are the local rangers, and what are they doing that this sort of thing can go on with impunity? Reports from the Waikato Acclimatisation Society state that the 20 brace of English partridges presented by Mr. Whitney to the Waikato Acclimatisation Society in January last are doing exceptionally well, only one having become a prey to the hawks; the thanks of the Waikato Society are due to their friends, who have systematically set about getting rid of hawks in the district. All the birds were liberated on Mr. R. Reynolds property, near Cambridge, and from the care that is taken of them they are likely to breed freely next season.
