The new American copyright law extends the author's term of protection from 42 to 56 years. Books in languages other than English are freed from the necessity of being printed in America in order to gain copyright. A musical composer may prevent altogether the mechanical reproduction of his work — as by phonograph or pianola. But if he permits any reproduction, he cannot grant a monopoly. Manufacturers, however, have to pay him a royalty of two cents per record. A wharf builder of San Francisco was rebuilding an old wharf, in which the piles were badly eaten by borers, when he came upon one that was perfectly sound. A careful investigation as to the cause of this singular exception revealed the fact that the pile had been used to support a live wire, which was grounded at this point. Taking a clue from this fact, the electricity in wooden piles, and he discovered that the teredo would not attempt to bore into a pile in which even a light current of electricity was maintained. A patent has recently been granted to the discoverer of this idea, on a system he has developed for electrically protecting wooden piles from the ravages of the teredo. It is commonly known that the gizzard of a fowl possesses enormous strength, but few realise how powerful it really it. An experiment was made a few years ago, says "Farm and Home," with a view to demonstrating the wonderful power of the gizzard. A small lead 'ball, about a quarter of an inch in diameter, had inserted into it 20 steel needles, the sharp ends of winch extended about the 16th of an inch beyond the surface of the ball. This was thickly covered with sugar, and inserted right down the birds throat, passing directly into the gizzard. The fowl was treated in the ordinary way, mixing generally with the flock, and at the end of a few weeks it was killed and opened. The ball was found in the gizzard, and ever yone of the twenty needles was worn down to the level of the ball. The gizzard itself was quite uninjured in any way, not a single mark being visible upon the surface. This if all the more lemarkable when it is remembered that the gizzard mei ely consists of gristle, there being not a single bone in its composition.
