Owing to the fact that the available supply of cedar wood is becoming scarce, all cigar boxes, except those used for the most expensive brands, will be made of paper before long. =* * *: The Mayoi of Auckland stated that the City Council was supplying water for an estimated population of 69,000, and a maximum consumption of 4,090,000 gallons a day. A consumption of 50 gallons a head was involved which should be ample even when the drainage scheme is completed. Anything drawn over that amount was due to waste and must be prevented. Allowing that up to the end of next month they required 2,000,000 gallons a day from the eastern springs, the total quantity pumped or taken from the reservoir would be 116,000,000 gallons out of a storage of 220,000.000. Only the first portion of the scheme as reported on by Mr. Mestayer was yet in hand. The second part was the building of a dam at Nihotupu, with a capacity of 220,000,000 gallons, and the extension of Tula, where 1,750,000 gallons of running water was available at the gravitation level. This scheme when completed, should serve the city for many years to come. The council, he added, had expended during the last seven or eight years a sum of £265,000 upon the extension and improvement of the water supply.
