The electrical generating equipment of the new battleships Mississippi and Idaho, now building at the yard of Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, will consist of eight ioo-kilowatt units operated at 12, volts. The electrical installation on the ships will be very complete, including motors operating on the Ward-Leonard system to drive the six big turrets for the 12m. and Bm. guns ; ammunition hoists for these guns as well as the smaller ones ; conveyors for transferring ammunition from the magazines to the hoists ; boat cranes and winches, and all blowers except those used for the production of forced draught. In addition, a complete system of telephones, call bells, buzzers, and steering telegraphs will be installed. For perfect combustion 81b. of oxygen are required for everj- pound of hydrogen, and 2flb. of oxygen for every pound of carbon. With the contracted damper opening of the modern locomotive this perfect combustion cannot be obtained, says the Iron Age One remedy that has been suggested is the staying of the fire-box with hollow stays having an inside diameter of -|in. and not over 3- 1 6th m. The amount of air that can be admitted through 1000 or more of these hollow stay blots is sufficient to improve the combustion very materially. Another good result of having air passing" through the stay bolts is that the risk of burning them is decreased, the expansion of the bolt is reduced and the likelihood of the plates cracking is largely avoided.
