Although full particulars of the census will not be available for publication until the end of June, we take this opportunity for stating that, so far, the returns disclose remarkable increases in most of the big centres of the colony. Wellington has added to its population by 33i% ; Palmerston North, 7t%; Auckland and Dunedin, whose complete returns are not yet given, have both shown a marked increase ; and Christchurch expands to the extent of 20%. This is indisputable evidence of the progress of the colony, and no doubt when the complete returns come to hand the increase .in our population will be shown to have been material.
