Constable Henry Royston, No. 767. The special attention of the members of the force is directed to the following description of Joseph Bryant, a dangerous member of the criminal class who was discharged on the 31st ultimo from the gaol at Dunedin. Description : English, a labourer, twenty-eight years of age, five feet six inches high, stout, compact build, auburn hair, partly bald, fair whiskers of aoout a month’s growth, fresh complexion, a lower tooth in front of mouth wanting, a small mole on forehead over left eye, wore very light grey tweed suit, black soft billy-cock hat, and Blucher boots, scar .across nose, two females under two colors and crown in centre of American flag, four stars and crescent, laurel wreath underneath, on chest, ship on belly, brig and lighthouse on right side, mermaid, flag in hand, left side, female dancing on a ball surrounded by rose, thistle, and shamrock, female bust, American banners and star on right arm, bouble bracelet and flags above right wrist, star on back of right hand, tree of LIBERTY, English banner under crucifix on left arm, tree of liberty, bird, four stars, bouquet, four fishes, double bracelet, and star on left forearm, female on left shin, flogging marks on back, can read and write. He was convicted at Auckland on the 3rd of June and Ist September, 1868, and sentenced to thirteen years penal servitude and twenty-five lashes for robbery with violence (2 charges), for attempting to choke with intent to rob (2 charges), and for being a criminal illegally at large.

The dark Irish frieze overcoat, the property of James Heron, stolen on the sth ultimo from the Glasgow Pie House, Princes-street, Dunedin, has been found by Detective Henderson in possession of the offender, Edward Butler, alias Charles James Donnelly, who has been sentenced to three months* labor for stealing it.

Vide Police Gazette , 1876, page 76. The Starboard lamp stolen about the Ist ultimo at Port Moeraki, the property of Joseph R. Bremner, has been recovered.

Vide Police Gazette lß76 , page 65. The wheelbarrow reported as stolen about the 7th of July last from the Cemetery-road, North Dunedin, the property of David Kirkwood, has been left back in the place from which it was stolen.

of William Oliver have been recovered and traced to the possession of Edward, alias Robert Butler, alias James Charles Donnelly, who has been arrested by Detective Henderson and committed for trial.

The heifer, the property of Henry Clarke, reported as stolen from a paddock at Tokomairiro on the 31st July last, has been found wandering, not stolen.

The liver-colored retriever bitch, the property of John Fothergill, reported as stolen on the 3rd ultimo at Manuka Creek, has been recovered, not stolen.

Archelius Perkins, charged on warrant with having disobeyed a summons to appear at the Justices’ Court, Dunedin, on the 24th of April last to answer a charge of having refused to provide for the support of his illegitimate child, has been arrested by Constable Mckenzie, Waihola Police.

Extracts from Victoria Police Gazette. From Police Gazette 26th July and 16th August, 1876. Thomas Tweed Tindall is charged on warrant issued by the Melbourne Bench, on the 22nd iust., with embezzling! the monies of the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria. Description : Twenty-two years of age, five feet seven inches high, fair hair, pale smooth face, dresses well, wears a gold Albert, with a small dog kennel charm, is a heavy smoker, and has been a sailor. He has a brother who is master of the barque Phoenix, trading to Apolla Bay; another

brother is living at or near the same place, and is a mail contractor, or engaged in connection therewith O. 4361, 25th July, 1876. This offender may have come to New Zealand ; his photograph is in the office of the Commissioner of Police, Dunedin.

MURDER.

ONE HUNDRED POUNDS REWARD. WHEREAS on the morning of the 13th July, 1875 one Samuel Jamieson disappeared from the neighbourhood of Brighton, New Zealand, and it was generally supposed that he had been drowned accidentally in Fox’s River: and whereas there is now good reason to suspect that the said Samuel Jamieson was on the date aforesaid murdered, and his body concealed : Notice is hereby given that a reward of £SO will be paid by the Provincial Government of Nelson for such information as shall lead to the discovery of the body of the said Samuel Jamieson, and an additional sum of £SO for such information as shall lead to the conviction of the murderer. Richard Thomas Slarke is charged on warrant issued by the Sandhurst Bench with embezzling various sums amounting to the sum of the moneys of the Independant Order of Oddfellows in 1875. Description : fifty years of age, five feet six inches high, slender build, slightly round shouldered, dark sickly complexion, black hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, all turning grey, Jewish appearance, may wear dark blue pilot top coat, dark trousers, and black hat with soft crown.
