Felonies and other Offences.

A warrant lias "been issued by the Justices’ Court, Dunedin, for the arrest of George Wain, alias Smith, alias Murphy, charged with stealing, on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mary M'Lauchlin, at Kensington, near Dunedin, one pair of long greenstone earrings, mounted with gold, figure of a head at top, a lady’s English gold ring, set with two red and two green stones, a gentleman’s English gold ring with large green stone, a gentleman’s colonial gold ring with two hearts (recovered), an American eight-day clock, round face, wooden case, about two feet high, a silver hunting Geneva watch, nearly new, maker’s name and number unknown, a long silver chain attached, very small links, one double and one single dark grey blanket, a pair of white twill sheets, a dark grey woollen shawl with white stripe through it, and an alpaca umbrella. Value, £lB. Identifiable, and other property since recovered by the Dunedin police. Offender is an Englishman, a boiler maker by trade, 22 years of age, 5 feet s|" inches high, medium build, blackhair, whiskers, beard and moustache, fresh complexion, laughing countenance. He left Oamaru about the 30th ultimo, and is supposed to have gone in the direction of Waimate or Timaru.

\ A warrant has been issued by the Justices’ Court, Dunedin, for the arrest of John Wilson, charged with obtaining three bales of corn sacks, value £45, by false pretences, from John M‘Lean, at Dunedin, on the 26th June last. Offender is a native of Glas-

gow, Scotland, has the appearance of being a mate of a ship, about 42 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, square build, ruddy complexion, fair hair, red whiskers, beard, and moustache, wore blue jacket, light trousers, and black hard felt hat. He represented himself to Mr. M‘Lean as a farmer from the Strath Taieri. On the day he obtained the sacks he had them conveyed to MDonald’s Livery Stables, Maclaggan street, where he left them for a few days. He gave his name there as Stewart, and stated that he was a farmer from near Catlin’s River.

A warrant has been issued by the Invercargill Bench for the arrest of Charles Golder, charged with deserting his wife, Margaret Golder, at Invercargill, on the 7th ultimo. Offender is a watchmaker, a native of Wellington, N.Z.,*'of Scotch parents, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight build, dark hair, beard, and moustache, dark complexion, dressed in light grey trousers, black felt hat, dark cloth poncho. Supposed to have gone to Wellington.

A warrant has been issued by the Palmerston Bench for the arrest of two men named Alston and \ Turner, charged with stealing, on the 14th ultimo, VjvV from Goodwood Bush, a nearly new calico tent, 6 ft. A by 8 ft. made by Edmond and Co., marked E. E. and \ * McN., the property of Henry Elston. a Value, 20s (Y) Identifiable. Alston is a labourer, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, brown hair and beard, the latter not very long, double row

of uneven teeth in front of mouth. Turner is a labourer, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, fair hair and beard, one upper front tooth wanting. They left the Bendigo Hotel, near Waikouaiti, on the 14th ultimo, in company for Blueskin, for the purpose of obtaining employment on the railway works there. Turner was then seen carrying the stolen tent.

A man of the following description is charged with having, on the 30th ultimo, assaulted, with intent, one Jane Chitty, in the house of a Mr. M £ Gregor, at the Corstorphine road, Caversham. Offender is about. 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, clean shaved, / slight build, dark hair and complexion, dressed in ' long, dark, rusty overcoat, dark trousers, lace-up boots, and black cap with peak. Identifiable.

Stolen, between the Ist and 21st ultimo, from Mokomoko Jetty, Southland district, a main-mast of a small schooner, having a piece of copper nailed upon it, jagged from lying on the rocks after the wreck of the schooner “ Nancy,” the property of Joseph Hatch. Value, £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to the crew of the “Kate Brain.”

Stolen, between the 9th and 12th ultimo, from the steamer “ Comerang,” at Port Chalmers or Bluff Harbor, two carpenters’ tool baskets, containing a trying plane, a jack plane, a smoothing plane, a rebate plane, a rip saw, a hand saw, a tennent saw, a key-hole saw, a brace and set of bits, a hammer, a mallet, a square, several chisels nearly all branded H. Halliday, a nearly new suit of grey Mosgiel tweed, sac coat, double-breasted vest, and a nearly new pair of elastic side boots, the property of Henry Halliday. Value, £l2. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 3rd instant, in the Australasian Hotel, Maclaggan street, Dunedin, a brown leather purse, 3 in. by 4 in., bound with elastic band, the name W. Pool written • on it in several places with ink, containing two £1 notes and 6s 3d in silver, the property of George Landon. Pocket-book identifiable.

Lost, or stolen, from the person of James Smith, on the 21st of September last, between Dunedin and the Glen, an open face silver lever watch, No. 7843. Maker, MTnnis, Glasgow. Value, £6. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 18th ultimo, from the shop of Povritt and Allen, at Oamaru, a tin cash box, 10 in. by 4 in. by 2 in., containing about twenty £1 notes on different Banks, about £2 15s in silver, a cheque for £3 12s drawn by Mr Hood, of Oamaru, in favor of Messrs. Povritt and Allen, and a number of receipts. Cheques and receipts identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Leslie, a Scotchman, a butcher, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, dark hair, beard, and moustache, shaved on cheeks.

Stolen, from Henry Naumagen, pawnbroker, Queen street, Auckland, on or about the sth August last, a hunting lever gold watch, No. 67268 ; an open face Geneva gold watch, No. 13384; an open face lever gold watch, No. 2243 ; an open face lever gold watch, No. 64,026 ; a hunting lever gold watch, No. 20513 ; a lady’s gold chain, pattern not known ; a single stone diamond gipsy ring; a hunting lever gold watch, No. 41330 ; an albert gold guard, pattern not known; a silver lever hunting watch, No. 23170 ; silver chain, pattern not known ; 3 gold studs, pattern not known; a gold brooch, pattern

Suspicion attached to Henry Hyams, who was for some time an assistant to Mr. Naumagen, but disappeared suddenly on the sth August, and is supposed to have left Auckland by the steamer “ Hero,” which sailed that day for Sydney and Melbourne. Description: a Jew, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, black curly hair, small, dark whiskers, beard, and moustache, long straight nose, walks with a limp, owing to his right leg being shorter than the left.

Stolen, on the 3rd instant, from the tent of James Bruce, Deborah Bay, Port Chalmers, a pair of moleskin trousers, not much worn, and a flannel shirt, a small hole in left sleeve. Value, 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 24th ultimo, from Pair field. Green Island, a large size black retriever dog, stout, heavy build, very curly hair, a small white spot on breast, a few light or grey hairs on lower muzzle, answers to the name “ Carlow,” the property of Peter Manderson. Value, £6. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 26th ultimo, from the person of George Dance, at Cromwell, a gold hunting lever keyless watch, No. and maker’s name unknown, a small dent in the centre of outer case ; a gold chain, straight links, 18 carat stamped on each link, a gold Spanish coin (half doubloon) attached to chain. Value, £75. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Samuel Yates, an Englishman, a labourer, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, dark complexion. (A doubtful case).

Stolen, about the 16th ultimo, from the verandah of the house of Mrs. Howorth, Walker street, Dunedin, an ordinary sized cane bottom folding chair, slightly worn. Value, 15s. Identifiable.

Horne, containing 4 chemises, 2 night dresses, 5 womens’ unbleached drawers, 2 white drawers, 2 petticoat bodies, 2 pair coloured stockings, a pair of unbleached stockings, 2 print costume dresses, 2 green print skirts, a green print body, 10 or 12 white pocket handkerchiefs, 2 pairs of old boots, an old check skirt, an old check body, a check holland apron, a black cashmere cape trimmed with lace, a black cloth jacket, and several other articles, the property of E. Horne. . Value, £5. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 6th instant, from the refreshment rooms at the Dunedin Kailway Station, a large size common decanter containing sherry, the property of H. J. Walters. Value, 7s 6d.

Stolen, on the 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Ledington, Pern Bush, near Winton, a morocco leather purse, containing a £1 note, 8s in silver, a penny stamp, and two bills from MDonald, an old clay pipe, and a pocket-knife with two blades. Stolen, on the 27th September last, from the yard of G-eorge Minifie, Castle street, Dunedin, a small American axe, nearly new, a small piece out of the handle near the head. Yalue, ss. Identifiable.

Stolen, about the 27th ultimo, from the pigeon house of Charles Eynmore, North-east Valley. Dunedin, ten common pigeons, five black and white, the wings of two cut, three dark brown, aud two mouse colour. Yalue, 10s. The two with wings cut identifiable.

Stolen, about the 21st ultimo, from the shop of Mary Murley, Maclaggan street, Dunedin, a new black lustre polonaise, six jet buttons down breast, and three on each sleeve, trimmed with the material of which it is made. Yalue, £2. Identifiable.

Stolen, between the 16th August last and 14th ultimo, from the wreck of the schooner “Spec,” at Catlin’s Diver, a kedge anchor, two topsail chains, and a wheel chain, the property of the New Zealand Insurance Company. Suspicion attached to the crew of the schooner “ Franklin Belle,” which was, on the 10th September last, anchored near the wreck of the “ Spec,” soon after which the articles stolen were missed.

Lost, or stolen, from the person of John Bennett, about the Ist ultimo, at Bennett’s Railway Camp, Elbow, Southland district, a brown leather, pocketbook, with the name, John Bennett, written on one of the leaves, cantaining three £lO notes on the Bank of New Zealand, two £5 notes, and a £1 note. Pocket-book identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Clinton, a shoemaker, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, no hair on face, wore Scotch cap, dark coat, and light tweed trousers. He went towards Queenstown.

Stolen, on the 26th ultimo, from the tent of Peter Ross, Tomahawk road, Anderson’s Bay, a meerschaum pipe, partly coloured, stem broken, and a blue and red coloured handkerchief. Yalue, 20s. Identifiable.

Stolen, about the 28th ultimo, from Machin’s right-of-way, Walker street, Dunedin, two grey rabbits, seven weeks old, long fur, and two young white rabbits, the property of John Harnell and Ellen Pathrick. On the 29th ultimo a youth of the following description sold the two stolen white rabbits at Harper’s shop, Fleet street: He is supposed to be Irish, about 17 years of age, 5 feot six inches high, dark hair, medium build, large mouth, thick lips, very talkative, dressed in black coat, dark trousers, and black felt hat. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the Ist instant, from the dwelling of Hugh Reid, Albany street, Dunedin, an open face silver Geneva watch, a small piece broken out of dial near the figure vii. Yalue, £2. Identifiable.

They left Trotter’s Creek, immediately before the saddle was missed, for Shag Yalley and Waikouaiti for the shearing. James is 26 years of age, 5 feet eight or nine inches high, stout build, round full face, dark hair, beard, whiskers, .and moustache ; rode a chesnut horse. Richard is 19 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, black hair, no hair on face, dark eyes.
