Felonies and other Offences.

A warrant'has been issued .by the Justices Court, Dunedin, for the arrest of George Hyde Campbell, late of the firm of Calvert and Campbell, china mer-chants„Prmces-street, Dunedin, charged with forgery committed on Sheppard Peeves, at Dunedin, on the 20th February 'last,' by altering a bill for £4l 17s 8d to £l4l 17s Bd. Offender is a Scotchman, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, round shouldered, short neck, slightly bow-legged, dark hair, inclined to baldness, dark whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, bloated florid complexion, dresses well, usually in dark clothes. He left Port Chalmers on the 21st ultimo in the ship William Davie, supposed for Hong Kong.

A warrant is about to issue by the West Taieri bench for the arrest of William Smyth, charged with obtaining goods to the value of £2 6s 6d by false pretences from Peter M. Grant, at Outram, West Taieri, on the 20th of March last. Offender is an Irishman, a farm labourer, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, freckled complexion, slim build, reddish hair worn long, very little if any beard, slovenly appearance, a recent arrival.

A warrant has been issued by the Justices Court, Dunedin, for the arrest of George Henry Alexander, charged with deserting his wife, at Dunedin, on the 3rd February last. Offender is an Englishman, a sawyer and labourer, 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, broad features, nose had been broken, addicted to drink.

Agnes Robertson is charged with deserting from the Industrial School at Look-out Point, Caversham, on the 23rd ultimo. She is about 13 years of age, tall and slim, good-looking, wore dark brown dress and white straw hat. She was committed to the Industrial School from Invercargill, where her parents reside, and to which place she will likely endeavour to return.

A warrant has been issued by the Justices Court, Dunediu, for the arrest of William Fielding, charged with the larceny as a bailee of a horse and harness, at Dunedin, about the 16th ultimo, the property of Nathaniel Campbell. Offender is an Englishman, a baker, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, stout build, dark hair, small goatee and moustache, dressed in light grey tweed suit and black felt hat.

Thomas Delicate and Peter Wattey are charged with deserting from Her Majesty’s ships Dido and Rosario, at Auckland, on the 2nd instant, for whose arrest £3 Reward each is offered. Delicate was blacksmith of the Dido, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, sharp features, pale complexion. Wattey was caulker of the Rosario, about 5 feet 10 inches high, brown hair, dark complexion, scar on left wrist, short dark whiskers, beard, and moustache. It is

believed they left _ Auckland by steamer for Southern ports on the 2nd instant. Lost, or stolen, on the Ist instant, from the plat-,-< form of the Dunedin Railway Station, a parcel co taining S yards bluff print, 4 heads of Alloa yarn, _ heads of scarlet fingering yarn, 5 dozen 200 yard reels, a gross of black braid, 1-lb. of white Berlin wool, 12 yards slate lining, 8 pair merino hose, 6 pair . lambs’-wool hose, 26 yards long cloth, 9 pair Alloa socks, 4 pair merino, 3 pair hose, and 12 dozen Chinese tape, the property of Mrs. Lucas. Value, £6 12s. 6d.

Siolen between 10 p.m. 15th and 10 a.m. 16th. ultimo from the dwelling of George Henry Barnes, London-street; Dunedin, a lady’s double case, gold English lever watch, chased cases, gold dial, black steel hands, black figures, no glass, number and makers name unknown, a gentleman’s diamond ring set with three diamonds, the centre diamond much larger than the other two, J. Hislop, stamped on inside. Watch value £25, and ring £3O, both identifiable: Suspicion attached to Gertrude Alice Bridger, Mr. Barnes’ servant. She is English, about 16 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, dark hair and eyes, pale complexion.

Stolen on the - 15th ultimo from the dwelling of Angus Shaw, Anderson’s Bay, a black portmonnie with elastic band broken, containing 225. in silver, and a pawn ticket of a silver watch. Purse identifiable. The pawn ticket was found torn two days afterwards behind a hedge near Shaw’s house from where Charles Croxford, suspected of having committed the theft was seen coming from on the day the theft was committed. Croxford is about 14 years of age, 5 feet high, dark hair, mark of burn on neck, wore brown monkey jacket, grey cord trousers with wide brown stripe at sides.

Supposed stolen about the 13th or 14th ultimo from the railway station at Campbelltown, two bladders of putty about 20 lbs. each, the property of Whittingham Bros, and Instone. Value 10s.

On the 22nd. ultimo, a window in the brewery of Keast and McCarthy, Filleul-street, Dunedin, was broken, the leather hinges of a writing desk in the office which stood near the window cut, and about 15s. in silver and coppers stolen therefrom.

Stolen, about the 15th ultimo, from the shop of Robert Brook, George-steet, Dunedin, a gentleman’s gold ring set with two diamonds, and a ruby in centre of diamonds. The diamonds are medium sized and the ruby a size larger ; the diamonds are backed up with silver in the setting which makes them reflect more brightly. Value £SO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alfred Drake, John Coleman, Emanuel Lyons, James Lees, and George Belcher, bookmakers, and gamblers. Drake is English, about 37 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexion hair and eyes, thin wiry build, carries his head on one side from an injury to his neck. Coleman is believed to be English, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion and hair, slight build. Lyons is English, a Jew, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark pale complexion, dark hair and eyes, prominent nose, stout build. Lees is believed to be Scotch, 28 years of age, 5 feet 61- inches high, fresh complexion, black hair, hazel eyes, slight build Beleher is English, 39 years of age, 5 feet 1 Oraches high, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, pled face, stout muscular build. Suspicion attached to Charles Jansen, a Dane, a farm labourer and cook, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, dark hair mixed with grey, dark brown beard and moustache, florid complexion from drink, wore long brown coat, dark tweed trousers, blue cloth vest and black felt hat. h

Stolen, on the 7th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mrs. Walters, in a right-of-way off George-street, Dunedin, a red and white muffler, 2 plain chemises, 5 pairs of lady’s plain drawers, 12 pairs of lady’s stockings, a lady’s dark brown waterproof cloak, all nearly new. Value £2 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen, about the 12th ultimo, from the mining claim of Joseph Beall, at Macetown, auriferous earth, supposed to contain about 30 ounces of gold. Suspicion attached to Chinamen, who reside in the locality.

On the 12th ultimo, the house of Arthur Caulder, at Lovel’s Flat was broken into and a lady’s gold chain, small link pattern, a gentleman’s heavy gold ring, flat and spread at edge, a name engraved on inside, one or two small gold nuggets about the size of a pea, and about £2 in silver. Value £lO. All identifiable except the money. Suspicion attached to Daniel Bobert Sharp, a sailor, about 18 years of age, stout build, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face, wore grey loose coat, dark trousers and black cloth cap with French peak.

Stolen on the 22nd. ultimo, from the dwelling of John Morris at Portobello, a black leather purse containing a £1 note and three half-crowns. Purse identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles Croxford, about 14 years of age, 5 feet high, dark hair, mark of bum on neck, wore brown monkey jacket, grey , cord trousers with wide brown stripe at sides.

Stolen on the 7th instant from the shop of Mary Boger, King-street, Dunedin, a parlor door mat, about 3 feet long, and a foot wide, two stripes black and blue, each about one inch wide round the edge, the centre orange and blue. Value, £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Francis, alias Port Wine Jack, an Englishman, a labourer, 52 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, black eyes, grey whiskers and moustache. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Cunningham and Buckley. Cunningham is Irish, a labourer, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high. Buckley is Welch, a labourer, a Brogden immigrant about 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high.

Stolen between the 4th and 7th ultimo, from the paddock of Bichard Irving, at Anderson’s Bay, a grubbing mattack and an old American axe, value 6s. Mattock identifiable.

Stolen between the 4th and 7th instant, from near the Deborah Tunnel, Port Chalmers, a nearly new

8 by 10 feet cluck tent, lined inside at one end with common druggeting, brass eyelets at end and sides to secure it to the ground, the property of the Provincial Government of Otago, value £2. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen at Port Chalmers or Dunedin, a box addressed T. J. Stuart, Dunedin, Otago, which arrived by the ship Rangitibei at Port Chalmers about the end of March last, containing plate tea service, spoons, forks, cake basket, claret jug, &c. ; dressing case containing trinkets, writing case, bed and table linen, large photographic album, &c.

Stolen about the 3rd instant, from the clothes line, of Charles Brotherston, Stafford-street, Dunedin, two pair of mens’ white Mosgiel plaid drawers. Value, 14s. Identifiable.

Between 5 p.m. on the 29th and 9 a.m. on the 31st ultimo, the office of the bailiff to the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Water-street, Dunedin, was entered, and a press or cupboard in the office forced open by a mortising chisel which was left behind by the offender and £123 16s. 6d. consisting of a £lO note or notes, £5 notes, £1 notes, a half sovereign, 6s. 6d. in silver, and a crossed cheque for £8 on the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, No. 340 dated the 20th May last, drawn by Nicholas Maloney in favor of Coleman Burke, & Co. stolen therefrom, the property of the General Government. Cheque only identifiable.

He is 35 or 40 years of age, 5 feet sor 6 inches high, florid complexion, small dark whiskers, and moustache, whiskers worn all round, rather hooked nose, wore dark clothes and soft black felt hat, has the appearance of a seaman.
