Felonies and other Offences.

A warrant has been issued by the Dunedin Bench for the arrest of Thomas Potter, alias David Salmon, charged with stealing, on the 18th instant, from the Munster Arms Hotel, Walker-street, Dunedin, a meerschaum pipe, the property of Patrick O’Brien, value 20s. Offender is an Englishman, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 3| inches high, sallow complexion, thin visage, broken or deformed nose, black hair worn long, dark whisker and moustache, dirty appearance, wore dark coat and vest, grey strapped trousers, and blue cloth cap. A warrant has been issued by the Waikouaiti Bench for the arrest of Thomas Williams, charged with deserting from the hired service of James Ritchie, at Flag Swamp, on the 9th instant. A man of the following description, who gave his name as George Stuart, is charged on warrant with stealing, from the person of John Russell, at Dunedin, on the Ist ultimo, a silver lever watch, gold guard and locket, now in possession of the Dunedin Police. Offender, on the 18th instant, gave the watch, guard, and locket to Thomas Kennedy to pawn, accompanying Kennedy to Solomon’s Pawn Office, George-street, Dunedin, and who, while Solomon went in search for a constable, made his escape, leaving the watch, &c., behind. He is supposed to be an Irishman, 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, black hair worn long, shaved on cheeks, no moustache, black goatee, sallow complexion, dark eyes, wore a dark alpaca jacket, pockets in seams at side, yellow-spotted trousers, black vest, and black felt hat.

John Young, supposed to be Irish, a sailor, 5 feet 11 inches high, 27 years of age, fair complexion, face shaved, small light moustache, light brown hair, smart,

active, and well built; dress when last seen, grey tweed suit, light billycock bat; is charged on warrant filed in the Commissioner’s Office, Christchurch, with refusing to support his illegitimate child, of which Helen Neilson is the mother. Offender is supposed to have gone from Timaru to Longbush, Invercargill.

A warrant has been issued by the Queenstown Bench for the arrest of William Brown, charged with bestiality at Queenstown on the 4th ult. Offender is a native of East End, London ; about 30 years of age ; 5 feet 2 inches high ; medium build ; smart, active gait; dark complexion, hair and moustache ; very little if any whiskers ; peculiar expression of face, as if mouth was crooked ; criminal appearance ; dressed in dirty bedford cord trousers; dark coat hat or cap ; and old elastic side boots. He was seen at Morvan Ferry on the sth ult., and at Chibes on the Gth ; and then said that he was going to Lowe’s Station on the Manuherika to shear or cook there. He arrived in Otago from England in 1868, by the ship Countess of Kintore, and worked his passage out.

Stolen or strayed, on the 20th ultimo, from NorthEast Valley, near Dunedin, a black cart horse, six years old, about 16£ hands high, short thick mane and tail,' no visible brands, the property of John B. Curran. Value £4O. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 4th ultimo, from the hut of Pierre Bennard, Coal Creek Range, Tapanui District, a double-barrelled gun, one barrel smooth for shot the other rilled, maker “ Sante Tien,” owner’s name (Pierre Bennard) inlaid in gold and silver on stock and barrels, spring bayonet under barrels, leather strap attached for sling, ; a silver-mounted powder horn and shot belt, with owner’s name on them. Value £SO. Identifiable. £5 reward is offered on recovery.

Stolen, on the 30th or 31st ultimo, on the Main Road, Tokomairiro, from the coat pocket of David Strain, a black portmonnaie with elastic band, containing one £5 note on the National Bank of New Zealand, and a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand for £5 15s. 3d., issued by Mr. Holt in favour of William Strain. Cheque and portmonnaie identifiable.

Stolen, on the 24th November last, and 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of Cecilia Phillips, Stuartstreet, Dunedin, a pair of cameo earrings set in gold, one of cameos cracked, gold fringe at bottom, design two acorns with leaves, a gold locket set with pearls and a ruby, with initials CMP and R II J engraved thereon, design star of pearls with ruby in centre. Value £3O. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 23rd instant, from on board the ship Lutterworth, at Port Chalmers, a nearly new black and grey tweed striped coat, vest, and trousers, a blue whituey jacket, a white linen shirt with two or three gold shirt studs in breast, a worsted necktie spotted white and blue, two silk neckties one blue and one brown, the property of Benjamin Brown. Value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Cleary, who was an apprentice on board the ship Lutterworth ; he is Scotch, 17 years of age, 5 feet 61 inches high, medium build, light brown hair, no hair on face, sunburnt complexion, long straight nose, will likely wear Scotch cap and the stolen clothes. This offender is charged on warrant with deserting from the ship Lutterworth at Port Chal-

mors on the 23rd instint, and for whose arrest £G reward is offered.

Stolen, on the 21st instant, from on board the steamer Mongol, at Port Chalmers, a double cylinder patent fire hand engine, wooden bottom about I{--* inch thick, makers Kircaldy & Co., Eastor, West India Road, London, value £52 ; and two iron-bound rope blocks, value £4, the property of Captain John Flamank. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to George Andrews, second mate of the barque Bobycito ; he is an Englishman, 22 years of age, stout build, fair hair cut short, no beard, whiskers or moustache.

Stolen, on the 9th instant, from the coat pocket of Charles Connell, in the Queen’s Bonded Store, Kingstreet, Dunedin, an old black-leather pocket-book, containing a deposit receipt on the National Bank of New Zealand, Switzers branch, for £4B, and six £1 notes. Deposit receipt and pocket-book identifiable.

Stolen, on the 3rd instant, from the baths at Pelichet Bay, Dunedin, a gold albert guard, small link pattern, and 20 towels, common pattern, red selvedge, had been in use for some time, the property of Alexander Roy. Value, £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen, between the 17th and 21st ultimo, onboard the steamer Wallabi, from two cases, between Dunedin and Bluff Harbour, 5 lady’s fancy riding whips, with electro-plated handles, 4 cane walking-sticks, 2 bottles of scent, 12 amber pipe mouthpieces, 3 tobacco pouches, 1 flower vase, the property of Abraham Hyams, Invercargill. Value, £5 7s. Gd. Suspicion attached to the crew of the steamer Wallabi.

Stolen, on the 29th ultimo, from the store of J. Graves, at Oamaru, a gold ring, set with nine diamonds in a cluster; the centre stone is about the size of a pea, the others are much smaller, and set round the large one in coronet shape. Value, £O4. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 3rd instant, from the bedroom of Jessie Baxter, Saville House, Stuart-street, Dunedin, a £1 note, which was torn, a half sovereign, and a two shilling piece. £1 note identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Forsyth, who was employed papering the house, a Scotchman, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, reddish beard and whiskers, worn all round.

Stolen, on the 15th ultimo, at Dunedin, a doublebreasted black overcoat, two pockets outside and one inside, torn a little on right sleeve, the property of Edward Drury. Value £2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles Williams, at present travelling with Murray’s Circus; he is an American, man of colour, a cook, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5| inches high, hazel eyes, black hair, thick lips, scar on left cheek.

Stolen, on the 18th instant, at Dunedin, from the person of Daniel R. P. Harris, a gold open-faced lever watch, white dial, large black hands and Ion" black figures, maker “ Barker,” Fleet-street, London 5 , marked with the letters DR PH in centre of back case; one gold curb pattern albert chain and gold / key with blood stone attached, and one gold diarno V and ruby ring, snake pattern. Stolen, on the 21st instant, at Lawrence, from the dwelling of Messrs Kelso and Bamford, about £45 in notes on various Banks.

Stolen, between the Bth and 14th instant, from Noble’s Hotel, Tapanui, a nearly new pair of grey tweed trousers, seam ripped about two inches on the inner side of left thigh, strap and buckle at waist, -the property of James A. Stolen, on the 12th instant, from the person of Antonio Nicholas, at Dunedin, a new red leather pocket-book, about five inches long, containing two £lO notes, six £1 notes, and five half-crowns. Suspicion attached to a fisherman from Otago Heads, a Spaniard, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, dark whiskers, upper lip shaved, wore dark pilot-coat, light tweed trousers, black felt hat, and long boots.

Stolen, between the 17th and 19th instant, from the dwelling of John King, Golden Beach, near Alexandra, a gold scarf pin, with Scotch pebble set in it, a gold toothpick, a gold pencil, a gold brooch with vine-leaf edges, 12 pillow covers, 1 pair of linen sheets, 2 linen table covers, 2 toilet covers, 3 antimacassars, 1 night dress, 2 chemises, 1 flannel petticoat, 2 napkins, 2 cotton diaper towels, 5 baby wrappers, 4 lbs. of tea, 2 bars of soap, 2 lbs. of candles, 6 packets of corn flour, and six boxes of matches. Value £B. Clothing and jewellery identifiable.

Stolen, on the 23rd instant, from Seyer’s Temperance Boarding House, Port Chalmers, a dark pilot monkey jacket, rough cloth, black velvet collar, four flat black bone buttons on right side and three on left side, slit at back, pockets on each hip with flaps, small pocket on right side, large inside left pocket, lined with red and black check flannel, small leather money bag in pocket, containing a new white pockethandkerchief, a small one-bladed white-handled penknife, the letters W K cut in handle, a pocket-book containing sea apprentice indentures, four new Maori likenesses, some papers with the name William Kerry written upon them, the property of William Kerry.
