HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING.

Stolen on or about the 17th August, 1864, from the run of Mr. James Reid, squatter, West Taieri, 1 red and white spotted bullock, low set, branded R off rump ; 1 red and white do., branded S off rump; 1 do. do., branded ™ on rump, Z near side ribs; 1 strawbery do., do. off shoulder,— James Duke , for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued. He is 30 years old, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, ruddy complexion, round features, light san y hair and whiskers, upper lip and chin clean shaved ; dressed in dark poncho and brown shell hat with blue veil, very respectable ap-

pearance, like that of a squatter. lie left Dunedin on the 2nd September, 1864, riding a grey mare in very low condition, branded S near shoulder.

Stolen sometime during the month of August, 1864, from the run of Mr. James Burrie, farmer, West Taieri, 1 red bullock, branded EL ; 1 do. do. without horns, same brand on near rump ; 1 red and white do., branded J near rump; and 1 strawberry do., branded FL on near rump. These cattle were also stolen by James Duke above described.

ADDITIONAL PARTICULARS. This man (Duke) was arrested by Sergeant Bullen on the 27th ult., on the road to Timaru, in the Province of Canterbury,. but subsequently succeeded in effecting his escape, by jumping out of a window through glass and sash, and with handcuffs on. He was at the time clean shaved, dressed in dark monkey jacket, grey trousers, vest, and shirt. <£3o reward offered for his arrest.

Stolen on the Ist September, 1864, from Moa Flat, the property of Messrs. Beattie and Goold of Miller’s Flat, 4 working bullocks, 2 of these branded JB, the other 2 RC, by Henry F. Begg, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued. He is about 30 years old, 6 feet 1 or 2 inches high stout built very erect, fresh complexion, light hair worn long, small dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed in light tweed, or black coat, knee boots worn over moleskin trousers, and black Glengarry hat; 2 of the bullocks have been recovered.

Stolen on the 16th September, 1864, from'a paddock at the West Taieri, a grey mare m low condition, branded C near shoulder, value £3O ; the property of Mr. Thomas 1 houipson, Walker-street, Dunedin, butcher.

A party of 6 miners suspected—consisting of William Smith, a Londoner, with a large nose; John Lyons, a Jew ;; Maitland Jim , medium height, 'thin build, fair hair; two others Welshmen; the sixth cannot be described—supposed to be making to the Waitaki. £lO reward onconviction.
