At 1 a.m. the 19th ‘March, 1864, a violent assault was committed on Police Constable Gaynor, while in the execution of his duty at Dunstan Creek, by a man named Thomas Kilmartin about 28 years old, 5 feet 8 inches high, long face, dark complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers,' no moustache, dark eyes, dressed in drab reversible coat, sometimes

wears a white and at other times a black cap, is well known at Hamilton’s. Supposed -he will make either for the Dunstan, Manuhenkia, or Dunedin.
