FELONIES AND OFFENCES NOT OTHERWISE DESCRIBED.

Stolen during the month of March, .1863, from Cox’s Station, Mount Somers, Timaru District, about 36 head of cattle, branded with broad arrow on near shoulder, the property of J. W. Hamilton, Esq., of Port Lyttleton. Supposed to have been driven South and disposed of at Dunedin or at some of the intermediate gold fields.

Stolen on the 19th March, 1863, from the Dunstan Ranges, a horse, the property of Mr. Thomas Vale of the Dunstan. The horse has since been recovered, and a warrant issued for the apprehension of the person named and described below, charged with the felony : —- John O’Neil, 38 years of - age'; 5 feet 7 inches high; sallow complexion; brown hair, cut short; clean shaved ; medium built; dressed in a light grey frock coat and vest, moleskin trousers, and knee boots.

A warrant, dated 26th May, 1863, has been issued by Jackson Keddell, Esq., R.M. Dunstan, for the apprehension of Richard Young, generally called “ Dick ” on a charge of stealing a light bay mare, black points, 13i hands high, branded D near shoulder, small star on forehead, long switch tail, rising 4 years old, saddle marked, the. property of Richard Bassett, Kawarau Junction. Vf- . Young is described as about 45 years of age, sft. 11 in. high,, round shouldered, stoops slightly, wants one or two teeth in front of mouth; hair turning grey, dressed in cord pants, long boots, and grey tweed coat. He was met on the road to < )amaru, and his final destination is supposed to be .Nelson.

Two bullocks as under, viz:One brindle bullock, white face, and one ‘ strawberry bullock, both branded 9 on the rump, were stolen from Messrs. (Joheber and Douglas, Maniototo Station.

. A bullock driver, named Bulmer, was seen to yoke the bullocks in his team. He was at ,that time taking up loading for Captain Baldwin, and is supposed now to be carting from Dunedin either to the Dunstans or Wakatipu. He is said to be known to Capt. Baldwin and Mr. McPherson.

A burglary was committed at 9 p.m. on 6th June, 1863, on the Criterion Hotel, kept by John Jack, at Manuherikia, by means • of a hole cut from an adjoining _ right-of-way through the wall of the house into the barparlor, when the following property was stolen, the greater portion of which is ldenti-

fiabie.—One cash : box, 9in.. x 4in., painted yellow, containing about 20s. in silver- one cheque, value £6 18s. drawn by W. D Drake on Bank of New South Wales, Manuherikia • one 1.0. U. for 15s. signed H. W. Robinson ; two colonial gold rings, about 9 dwts. each; one a very rough nuggetty ring, the other a plain signet ring with letters Dy» or fiD inside.

The dwelling-house of Dr. Jackson, at Dunstans, was entered between the hours of 6 and 7 p.m. on the Bth June, 1863, and;. the 61 lowing property stolen therefrom. About f£lo7 in notes, 27 oz. 17 dwts. of gold, and a piece of amalgamated gold in a New Zealand Bank bag. Not identifiable.

The tent of James Sloan, dairyman, Lawrence, was entered at 2 p.m. on the 4th June, 1863, during the absence of the owner and the following ..property/, stolen therefrom.—l silver lever watch, open-faced, no glass, silver chain attached.. No further description given. Identifiable, j'A /■/• V

. The shop of John Perrin, . Dunstans, store-, keeper, was entered between the hours of 7 and 8 o’clock, p.m., 27th May, 1863, while the proprietor and his wife were sitting in . the room behind, and a japanned cash-box without a lid, containing one £5 note, twelve £1 notes, one account book with the Union Bank, and two cheque books on the same bank, stolen therefrom. The box and two- letters contained therein are identifiable.

. A carrier, named James Henry. Pearce, was invited by Saul Solomon into the house of the latter, at the Manuherikia, while Pearce was drunk, and having, been put to sleep, was robbed of £63 in notes and gold, amongst which were two £5 notes on the Bank of New South Wales numbered 684372 arid 75431. Solomon afterwards cashed an 1.0. U. of Pearce’s for £lO 175., was arrested for stealing it, tried, and discharged.

A man, name unknown, described as about 40 years of age, : sft. Gin.' high, dark complexion, dark hair, and large whiskers, inclined to turn grey, dressed in long.jblack coat and brown felt hat, is reported to f have attempted. to sell about 13ozs. spurious gold, to Messrs. Walsh and Nash, Dunstan, and on discovery to have made; his escape. The same offender sold on the same day about 6ozs. of spurious gold to Robert Kettle, storekeeper, Dunstan.

Eveylyn Lockley is charged upon warrant with embezzling from the National Bank of Australasia at Caringham a sum of £63. lie is supposed to have appropriated altogether £747 Os. 7d., and is believed to be now in -New Zealand. ' He is described as 31 years, of age, sft. lOin. high, slight build, light complexion; fair hair, small moustache and beard, delicate respectable appearance, an Englishman.

William Smith is charged upon warrant now in the office of the Commissioner; of Police, Otago, , with having on or about the 20th March, 1863, at Sydney, N. S. v» de-

serted his wife Annie. -He is described as an Englishman, about 28 years of age, oft. • B£in. high, sallow complexion, light brown hair and whiskers, the latter worn in the Yankee style, roman nose, dark ieyes, rather slender build. The letters M S arc tatooed on the outside of the upper right arm, and a blue ring on the second finger of his right hand. On leaving Sydney he desired his letters to be addressed to : him at Mr. James Paterson’s Walkerstreet, Dunedin.

A warrant has been issued for: the ■ apprehension of Henry Banks, charged with obtaining, about the ,28th of May last, from Joseph Jackson, Esq., Bank of New Zealand, £7O upon two escort receipts for gold deposited in the Treasury. On examination of the' bags . they were found to contain shot. Description—About sft. sin. high, 40 years of age, medium build, inclined to be:. thin, dark whiskers, and dark short beard, pale complexion, supposed to be an Englishman, said he was working at the ■ Arrow River. This man is known to the assistant clerk Henry ; (surname unknown) at the New Zealand > Bank, Dunstan Diggings.

Stolen, on the the stli of June instant, from the shop door of Mr. Hugh Gordon, Draper, George Street, North Dunedin, one dozen Crimean Shirts, various patterns. Not identifiable. '•

Stolen on the night of the 7th of June inst. from the person of Theophile de Lisle, while asleep in a brothel in Dunedin, a purse containing £ls 10s. in gold and 7s. Gd. in silver. John Wilke, alias Brummy, and Mary Ann Jones, alias Mary Ann Wilke, with whom he cohabited, have been arrested and committed for trial. The greater portion of the money recovered. - ’’ '

Stolen, on the 4th of June instant, from the person of James Gibson, while asleep in a dray, at East Taieri, a silver lever watch, since recovered; and a man, named David Brown arrested and committed for trial for the offence. • •

A man named John Shief has been tried and convicted at Dunedin Criminal Sessions for obtaining a passage for himself • and three other persons, from Invercargill to Dunedin, in the steam-ship William Mishin, by false pretences. A bank deposit receipt belonging to Thomas Mclntosh, for £6O, dated 14th January, 1863, of the Union Bank of Australia, was found in his possession. Every enquiry to be made for whereabouts of Thomas Mclntosh, who reported the loss of said receipt to the Union Bank, at the Arrow, on the loth April last.

Stolen on the 12th of April last from the person of George Stephenson, labourer, Saddle Hill, while coming towards Dunedin, being at the time under the , influence of liquor, a gold ring, a cheque for £lO, four sovereigns, and some silver. A man named Andrew Hayes subsequently apprehended and convicted of the felony. Portion of the property recovered.

James B. Pritchard is charged, on warrant issued at Melbourne, with embezzling ■ large sums’of money from his employers, Robert Towns & Co. of that place. Offender was chief. clerk to the firm, and is described as 28 or 30 : years of age, fresh complexion, careworn look, cheeks slightly sunken, rather high cheek bones, full black whiskers worn under the chin, small imperial, no moustache, medium build, black straight hair, light, grey eyes, an Englishman, generally dresses in black. Highway Robbery and Stealing from

the Person

The Rev. Herbert Guinness was assaulted about; 9.30 p.m. on the 26th March, in the Carlton Gardens, by two men, and robbed ■; of the following property: —A silver open-faced geneva watch, No. 3120, and about £3O in a dark brown portemonnaie.

BB The first offender was about 30 jmars of . age, 5 feet three or four inches high, stout build, and clean shaved; wore fustian coat", and trousers, and cap without peak; general appearance that of a bricklayer. The second man cannot be described.—lst April,’ 1863. It has since been ascertained that one of the above offenders is the celebrated Jonhny Campbell who was leader of the gang of bushrangers between Little Bendigo and Korong, in 1853. He is described as 46 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion aud grey •eyes; dark hair (curly) mixed with grey, JCAC. upper left arm, marks of flagellation on back. Supposed, to be in this province.
