BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

The Presbyterian Assembly sits in Dunedin as we , write. It is evident that it is going to make another fight for the Bible in Schools Bill. During a discussion reported in the Otatjo Daily Tim November 13, it was sad that in the new Parliament there would he a majority of members who favored the Bill'. There are only two things wrong with this Bible in Schools business. In the first place it is a cool attempt to Protestantise all the public schools of New Zealand : to make themProtestant schools. There is no, doubt, protest as they -please, that this is exactly what the proposal amounts to. In the second place, as far as practical reform goes, these reverend gentlemen might as well be -tilting at windmills as trying to save the country by the introduction of colorless reading from the Bible. Even if they get their Bill passed and succeed in Protestantising the schools of New Zealand, they will find that the verdict of the Magistrate to whom l we referred on another part of this page will still remain : Only schools in which religion is taught thoroughly, as it is in Catholic schools, can save the country.

There, is nothing which gives greater security to our actions, or more effectually cuts' the snares the devil lays for ns, than to follow another person’s will, rather thanour own, in doing good. •.
