(From our own correspondent.) July 10. The weekly meeting of the Catholic Literary and Debating Society took place on Wednesday evening last, the president (Mr. Val Cullen) presiding. A challenge for an inter-club debate was received from the newly-formed St.- Andrew’s Club, and accepted, the date decided upon being September 7. It was decided to issue an invitation to the members of the . St. Stephen’s Club to a euchre match in the club rooms on the- Loth inst, ' The secretary was instructed to write to the Timaru Catholic Club, challenging for an inter-club debate in September. The programme for the evening took the form of an “Editor’s Box,” and after several interesting questions had been debated' the meeting terminated. , The various committees appointed for the purpose of raising funds in connection with the forthcoming bazaar arc still very active.

The half-yearly meeting of the St. Patrick’s branch of the H.A.C.B. Society was held on Monday evening, the 6th inst. Bro. F. L. Brophy presiding over a large attendance. The sick visitors’ report showed three brothers on the sick fund. The secretary reported that members appeared to manifest little interest in the taking up of shares in connection with the dispensary, and it was decided that another appeal be made for support. The election of officebearers resulted as follows: —President, Bro. H. Lennon ; vice-president, Bro. T. 0. McIntyre; treasurer, Bro. Very Rev. 1 Dean O’Donnell; secretary, Bro. F. Lennon; warden, Bro. J. Williams; guardian, Bro. J. O’Shea; delegates to United Friendly Societies Association, Messrs. W. Bryant and F. Lennon; auditors, Messrs. T. W. Purcell and Jas. Brown.
