HALF-YEARLY MEETING. , ■ The half-yearly report 01 the Society of St. Vincent vio Paul was handed to mo recently by the genial secretary, Mr. M. Kelly (writes our Auckland correspondent). The report discloses' a very satisfactory state of affairs, and incidentally the fact that a great amount of continuous and ' far reaching Christian work has been effectively and laudably carried out by this noble band of workers who deserve the highest commendation for the time and attention devoted to this duty. By their energy and zeal the society is fast spreading its Vincentian spirit throughout Auckland, and the half-yearly report speaks volumes for the valuable work done among the poor and afflicted. The Ladies' Conference in this particular has been an important and effective auxiliary in this splendid achievement. Our Lord has said that the poor you will always have with you, and these ladies have realised it in the true Christian spirit, and have worked early and late for "God's glory and to relieve the sick, the suffering and distressed. The society's work is told in a few brief but memorable sentences. The inmates of the hospital, Costley Home, gaol and Blind Institute have been regularly visited once weekly, and Catholic literature distributed, besides cheering and hopeful words expressed; employment has been found for men out of work; passages have been paid for others who secured work in the country; visits have been made to the homes of the poor where death has entered, and the Holy Rosary recited; regular concerts have been given to brighten the lives of the aged in the Costley Home and other institutions, and various other works of charity are being continuously performed. The 'receipts for the half-year are given in detail and make interesting reading. Balance in hand, £9B lis; received from poor boxes, £l7O 17s 7d ; collections by members, £47 7s 9d; donations and subscriptions, £lßl 4s lOd; hon. members' subs, £4 lis refunds, etc., £2 Us 2d. Total receipts, including balance in hand, amounted to £530 5s 6d. The total expenditure for the half year was £3Bl Us 4d, disbursed as • follows: —Kind, £214 9s lOd ; board and lodging, £4 15s 6d; house rent, £25 18s; clothing and bed clothes, £4L.dßs 9d; fares and passages, £9 7s 8d; unclassified expenditure, £62 8s 4d; sundries, £4_l3s 6d; annual levy, £l7 19s 9d. The credit balance for the ensuing half year amounts to £l4B 14s 2d. The half yearly statistics show active members, 83; cases, 115; persons relieved, 403; visits paid to poor in own home, 471 employment found for 4; passages paid for six; clothing and boots provided for 58; lodging and meals provided for, 88; books and other papers distributed, 1320; and visits to institutions, 333. In addition to the above, 74 parcels of clothing were received and 372 articles of clothing and 24 pairs of boots were distributed; also several packages of clothing sent to poor families in the country; six were clothed and prepared / to receive Holy Communion. Such work deserves warm commendation and assistance of all the faithful. To help these noble band of workers to maintain and extend their efforts in the cause of God and for the benefit of humanity, is a work that should appeal to all. Warriner, representative of Trinity College of Music, London, conducted the practical examination in the Convent of Mercy Greymouth.
