At a numerously attended and enthusiastic!. meeting of the parishioners of the North-east Valley, held on last Sunday afternoon at the Sacred Heart Schoolroom, Rev. Father Kaveney, Adm., presiding, it was decided to organise a queen carnival to raise funds for the erection of a new convent for the Dominican Nuns who have charge of the Catholic schools of that portion of the city. The, urgency of the undertaking was emphasised by Fathers Kaveney and Spillane, and others who appreciate the splendid work of the nuns and realise the disadvantages both in health and. comfort they are subjected to through their need of a suitable habitation. An energetic committee, with Mr. B. Gallien as secretary, was formed to at once arrange the details of a carnival on an extensive scale. The -'.people of the Valley unanimously decided to provide at least three stalls, and these were allotted as follows: —Refreshments and sweets, Airs. Crichton: produce, Mrs. Fraser; fancy stall, Mrs. Heslin. Mrs. (4. AI. Baker has consented to organise a sports stall, while the Children of- Mary and the Hibernian Society are to be asked to take, charge of others. To provide funds for furnishing the various stalls it is proposed to arrange fortnightly socials of a varied nature, and the first of these—a euchre party —is to be held in the schoolroom on Thursday evening, the 24th inst.
