A Popular Official Honored

(From our Ashburton correspondent.) The Catholic schoolroom was filled to overflowing on V ednesday evening week, the occasion being the parishioners farewell to Mr. T. M. Brophy, prior to his leaving on promotion to the Timaru Post and Telegraph Office. Mr. M. J. Burgess presided. The earlier portion of the evening was spent in progressive euchre, the prizes' being won by Miss S. Madden and Mr. F. Lennon. Musical items were contributed by Miss AI. Quigley and Miss Alulvey, Messrs. M. J. Burgess, G. Hutchinson, and L. Hanrahan. During an interval, the chairman called upon the Very Rev. Dean O’Donnell to make the presentation of a leather suit case, suitably inscribed, together with a Kaippi rug, to Mr. Brophy, and in doing so the Dean referred to the valuable assistance given at all times to Catholic societies and organisations by Mr. Brophy, over a period of close on 20 years. The Dean’s remarks ere fully endorsed by Messrs. S. Madden and T. W. Purcell (Hibernians), V. Cullen and H. Lennon (Catholic Club), M. J. Burgess (choir), and Messrs. D. McDonnell, L. Hanrahan, and R. Nealon, on behalf of the parishioners. Each of the speakers referred in glowing terms to the valuable work accomplished by Air. Brophy. Mr. Mulvey (Postmaster) also testified to Mr. Brophy’s sterling qualities while employed in the Ashburton office and wished him that success he undoubtably deserved in the south. Mr. Brophy, on rising to reply, was received with the singing of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” He heartily thanked the parishioners for their most valuable present, a gift he would always treasure. While his departure meant for him promotion, it also meant the breaking off of a friendship with many of whom he was proud to have been associated. After supper had been partaken of, for which in no small way must thanks go to Airs. S. Madden, who supervised, a gathering unique not only for numbers but for enthusiasm, concluded. • . V-
