ASHBURTON NOTES

(From our own correspondent.) February 23. The Ashbiirton. Catholic Literary and Debating Society will re-open for its winter .session early in March. 26 years of practically uninterrupted and successful effort is the record this society to-day holds, and the prospects for the coming year are as bright as they ever were. The executive is to meet at an early date, when programmes, etc.. will be drawn up. A society of this nature is an asset to any Catholic community. The convent schools here recently re-opened after the mid-summer holidays, and the Sisters are pleased to report improved attendances.. . The pupils of the local convent schools .journeyed to Timaru on Thursday, the 21st inst., the occasion being their annual picnic. The day turned out to he an ideal picnic one, and the outing was thoroughly enjoyed by those participating. The fortnightly meeting of the St. Patrick's branch (No. 420) of the H.A.C.B. Society, was held on Monday evening, the 18th inst., and was presided over by Tiro. F. L." Brophy. One brother was declared off the sick fund, and sick pay amounting to £3 3s Id was passed for payment. Correspondence was received from the District Secretary and left in the hands of the secretary to reply to. The quarterly Communion was fixed for Sunday, March 1(5, when it was decided that a special effort be made to persuade all brothers to parade in regalia. -His Lordship the Bishop (Dr. Brodie) is going to, administer the Sacrament of Confirmation in Asliburton shortly, and with this.view in mind, quite a number who have not yet been confirmed, are preparing. ■ '■■"
