WANGANUI NOTES

~ x {(From our own correspondent.) 4 ;'--■ '. February 23. : : . More distinguished visitors are still arriving from Australia for the Jubilee every week, and' most of them are. doing the AVanganui River. Last week, Archbishop Chine, of Perth, and Dr. Dunn, Administrator, accompanied by Rev. Father Holbrook, Auckland, were here for a little time. This week, more are expected. The Children of Mary's Retreat at Aramoho was indeed a great spiritual refresher and a success. 'Hie Aramoho society, about ■ thirty strong, attended eagerly and regularly. Daily Mass was at half-past six, and all the girls received Holy Communion daily. The evening exercise was at seven o'clock—Rosary, Benediction and Instruction—and the attendance was always a little larger at night as many of the women and girls of St. Mary's managed to attend then. Friday night was Our Lady's special night, it being also an .open night for the general congregation! Father O'Leary preached a beautiful .sermon on Our Blessed Mother, and there was a line procession in which the, Children of Mary and the school children took part. The statue was carried round the church in procession, and the flower-girls had lovely hydrangea blooms instead of the. white lilies which are not just now. The -Retreat was finished on Sunday afternoon with special ceremony and a Reception took place of 14 aspirants and 9 Children of Mary. The few days, crowded-as they were, came to an end all too quickly, and the senior girls who busied themselves about the decoration of the church and anything else to be done, would have gone on quite cheerfully. Before finishing the Retreat right up, Rev. Father' Outtrim thanked Father O'Leary for all the. trouble he had taken to make the Retreat so helpful and interesting to all. The juvenile St. Vincent de Paul Society" (youths) of Aramoho, held their very first social last week. It was a great success, and two of their number—Alex. Robinson and Edward Locke—are being sent to the .Jubilee celebrations as delegates of their branch. This is a real branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, these boys assisting the Aramoho men in the teaching of Sunday school, visiting the sick, and any other works of mercy being done. • " ~-00-> _
