Visit of Archbishop Mannix to St. Dominic's

St. Dominic's College, Dunedin, was en fete on February 12, when it welcomed for the. first time within its walls the Most Rev. Dr. Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne. The nuns and resident pupils had their first glimpse of the distinguished prelate when his Grace celebrated Mass in the consent chapel, but it was not till afternoon that the rest, of the pupils were similarly favored. At about 3 p.m. Dr. Mannix, accompanied by the Most Rev. Dr. Barry, Coadjutor-Archbishop of Hobart, Right Rev. Dr. Hayden, Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes, Right Rev Dr. Foley, Bishop of Ballarat, Right Rev. Dr. Shiel, Bishop of Rockhampton, Fathers O'Neill (Waikiwi), Foley, Adm.. and Tylce. entered the study hall, which was decorated with streamers of white, green and gold, while welcomes in Irish and Maori adorned, the "walls;.- The pupils of the-senior and intermediate schools, in .college uniform relieved ; by emerald ribbons, completed a pleasing picture; After greeting tin*'

guests, the children rendered a short programme of choruses —"Clod Defend New Zealand," ''The' Harp That Once," "Vale of Avoca," and the college song, "Hail to Our Alma Mater." Dr. Mannix then brieJly addressed the girls, congratulating them on their spirited singing, and expressing his'pleasure -at the threefold tribute paid by their songs', to his country, to theirs, and to their school. The children of the preparatory and junior schools grouped in the playground were-next visited, after which the distinguished guests were photographed with a 'group of .the pupils. The granting of two days' holiday gave joy to the hearts of the children, but perhaps their most vivid recollection of Archbishop Mannix will be as he stood with hand upraised in blessing while they knelt before him on the morning of his departure from Dunedin.
