Ordinations at Mt. St. Mary’s, Greenmeadows

On Sunday, December 16, the ordinations for the year were held in the Seminary Chapel, when besides conferring several other , orders his Grace Archbishop Redwood, S.M., ordained seven priests. The newly-ordained are Father Scanlon, S.M. (Wellington), Father Cleary, S.M. (Waimate), Father Egan, S.M. (Timaru), Father M. Dowling, S.M. (Wanganui), Father Bowler, S.M. (Inglewood), Father MacHardy, S.M. (Pihama), and Father Kennedy, S.M. (Geraldine). The little chapel was crowded with the relatives and friends of those ordained, and besides the local clergy the following were present: Rev. Father O’Rielly, S.M. (Provincial), and Rev. Fathers Gilbert, S.M., Gondringer, S.M., G. Mahony, S.M., Ryan, S.M., J. Dowling, S.M., Buckley, S.M., Joyce, S.M., and Riordan, S.M. His Grace the Archbishop presided at the banquet that followed the ceremony, and in proposing the toast of the newly-ordained after congratulating them and their parents, said he rejoiced especially in the fact that on that day the Seminary had sent out its one hundredth and first priest. He remarked further that the seven new priests were all past students of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, and his Grace recalled with pleasure his work in founding that college which had been the source of such benefits for r the Church in New Zealand. The toast proposed by his Grace was warmly received, and Father Scanlon replied suitably on behalf of the newlyordained. In the afternoon Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was given. Father Scanlon, S.M., was celebrant with Father Cleary, S.M., as deacon, and Rev. Lysaght, S.M., as subdeacon. The next morning Fathers Scanlon, Cleary, and MacHardy celebrated their first Masses in the Seminary Chapel. Fathers Kennedy and Egan celebrated theirs in the church at Meeanee; while Father Dowling said his at St. Patrick’s, - Napier, and Father Bowler at the Convent of the Sisters of the Missions, Napier. —
