DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own correspondent.) February 19. Rev. Father McLean, of the Irish Mission to China, made an appeal at the Masses at the Sacred Heart Church. Addington, on Sunday, in aid of the mission. In the evening .Rev. Dr. Maguire addressed the congregation with a similar object. The Christian Doctrine Shield presented to the Marist Brothers' School by Sir George Clifford, having received its full complement of winning names has now been replaced by a new one of exquisite design on a beautiful oak slab; and is a fine specimen of the handicraft of Mr. G. T. "White, of Colombo Street. The first name on the old shield is that of J. McAloon, now deceased, and the last Edgar Murphy, now at the Sacred Heart College, Auckland. Master R. Noonan opens the honors on the new shield. Rev. Brother Phelan expresses his gratitude (in which he is joined by all friends of the school) to Sir George Clifford for his practical interest in the boys.

A well-attended meeting of St. Mary’s “branch of the H.A.C.B. Society was held at Ozanam Lodge on Monday evening last, Bro. H. O’Connor, 8.P., presiding. Sick allowance (£1) and accounts (£l6 19s 3d) were passed for payment. One new member was initiated. The? quarterly balance sheet and annual report submitted by the secretary (Bro. Johnston) were favorably commented upon, parti-

cularly by Bro. M. Grimes (district deputy), who offered congratulations to Bro. O'Connor on the special efforts he was making in the interests of the branch. Several visiting brothers were present from St. Patrick's branch, and were welcomed by the president, and Bro. E. Fitzgerald, B.P. (St. Patrick's), replied. Bro. J. Ormandy advocated special interest in functions being organised in the district for the benefit of Nazareth House. A social evening followed, entertaining items being given by Bros. H. and S. Doherty, M. Walls, A. Delacour, E. Turner, L. Haughey, J. Ormandy, M. Grimes, and L. o'Sullivan. (Continued on page 31.)
