DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(.From our own correspondent.)

October 30. The Cathedral Schools’ garden fete arranged for 21st and 23rd October, owing to unfavorable weather conditions, was postponed until Saturday last. Rain, however, which set in during the early hours of the day, again necessitated a postponement, and it has been decided to hold the fete on Saturday next, - November 4. On Sunday evening at the Cathedral devotions the Sistine Choristers sang the major portion of the Benediction music. The “0 Salutaris” sung .unaccompanied by the full company, will long be remembered by the immense congregation. Needless to say the solo, “Ave Maria” and duo sung by Signors Paganelli, Facchini, and Rasponi, respectively, were object lessons in devotion and art. Rev. Dr. McEvey addressed in Italian words of welcome to the visitors, and gave an interesting discourse on the Sistine Chapel and the influence and work of the Papacy in furthering the arts and sciences.- His Lordship the Bishop, entertained the •Sistine Choir Soloists after the, devotions. His many friends will be glad to learn that Rev. Father Stewart, S.M., who has been an inmate of Lewisham Hospital,' is progressing favorably in health. Socials were recently held at Papanui, and in Hie Memorial Hall, Manchester Street, in aid of the funds of the projected garden fete for St. Mary’s. The former was organised by the Papanui parishioners and the latter by the members of the Children of Mary Sodality., Both were well patronised. The devotion of the Forty Hours’ Adoration, at St. Mary’s, was commenced after the 11 o’clock Mass on Sunday. Solemn High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father' O’Connell, S.M.; Fathers Graham, S.M. (St. Bede’s College) and Seymour, S.M., being deacon and subdeacon respectively.
