They sadly wanted a few. "green stripes" from the Christian Brothers. To add to the ignominy of the defeat both Southland teams were selected and coached by Rev. Brother Anastasius, of the local Marist Brothers' teaching staff. ASHBURTON. The second animal meeting of St. Mary's Tennis Club was held last week, ; the president (Mr. Val. Cullen) presiding over a.very large attendance of members and supporters. The annual report and balance sheet were presented by the secretary and showed the club to be in an exceptionally fine financial position. The president stressed the importance of the club, and referred to "the past year's record as one which the club and its members might well be proud of. On his motion the. report and balance sheetwere unanimously adopted. The following office-bearers, with Very Rev. Dean O'Donnell as patron, were elected for the ensuing year:President, Mr. Browne; captain, Mr. ]). Fitzgerald; vice-captain. Mr. 11. Lennon; secretary, Miss Florrie McSherry ; assistant .secretary. Miss E. Dalton; committee, Mrs. Dunkley, Misses K. Walsh and N. McTigue, Messrs. V. Cullen. J. Collins, and E. Brophy. Judging by the numerous attendance and enthusiasm displayed at the meeting the forthcoming season should be a very successful one. . . . THAMES. The Marist Brothers' Vermont .Street (Auckland) School lightweight Rugby team arrived from Auckland on Tuesday night,, and were welcomed by Mr. P. J. Hook, headmaster of the Thames South School (says the Thames Star for August 31). The visiting team, in charge of Rev. Brother Eusebius (headmaster), with the assistant master (Rev. Brother Eugene) as coach, has a splendid record, being the winners of the Auckland Public Schools' lightweight competition, and having played 14 matches and won 14, the points scored being For 295, against 13. It is easily understood, therefore, that the team has exceptional combination, while the boys display a knowledge of the rules of the game that most senior teams would envy. Such a visit was naturally looked forward to by "the local boys with keen pleasure, and a friendly match played yesterday between the visitors and a lightweight team representing the Thames South School, though the result was obvious, attracted much attention, and no doubt enabled the Thames boys to pick up many points that will prove useful on future occasions. The weather was ideal and the ground in excellent condition. The. play was, of course, somewhat one-sided, though the home team put up a strenuous fight, and the visitors won by 31 points to 11. For the visitors Little (1), Denize (1), Ganley (1), Kennelly (1), Hay ward (2), Turner (1). and Grace (2) scored tries. Kennelly and Maguire each converted one. Hook shone in the home team, scoring three tries and converting one. Mr. Vedder refereed, and Mr. Little capably carried out the duties of line umpire. The president of the Rugbv Union (Mr. G. R. Darrow) provided a motor to convey the teams to and from the racecourse, and also to-day took the boys for a motor trip. Everything possible has been done to entertain the visiting scholars, and the Marist Brothers, when speaking 'to a reporter, expressed, on behalf of themselves, and the boys, keen appreciation of their kind treatment, and their gratitude to Messrs. Hook and Darrow for all they have done to make the."boys welcome, and to the Rev. Father Dignan, who arranged the visit and billeted the team. The boys are also greatly delighted with their trio and the reception accorded them by the Thames scholars.
