Callan, sen., at the age of 71 years. The late Mrs. Callan . (nee Brophy) was born in Victoria, Australia. In early womanhood she conducted a private school for girls at Ararat, Victoria, and afterwards came to New Zealand to pursue the teaching profession. In 1881 she married Mr. J. B. Callan, who had then recently commenced practice in this city. There are a son and daughter of the marriage—Mr. J. B. Callan, jun., and Mrs. E. 11. Goulter. The late Mrs. Callan had resided in Dunedin for nearly 40 years, where she won the esteem and respect of the whole community. Ever foremost in every work connected with religion, education, N and charity, she was an active member and office-bearer for many years of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, of the Jubilee Convalescent Fund, and Hospital Guild. Some years ago Mr. and Mrs. Callan left Dunedin in search of a warmer climate, living latterly at Mahakipawa, Marlborough, close to their daughter, Mrs. E. R. Goulter. Mrs. Callan's health was never robust, and some seven months ago it broke down completely, and she came back to Dunedin in order to be near priest ..and doctor. The deceased bore her illness with exemplary patience and resignation. Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul was celebrated at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Tuesday morning, the 4th inst., by Rev. Father Marlow, who also officiated at the interment, which was a private one, in the Anderson's Bay Cemetery. At the meeting of St. Joseph's Cathedral Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society on Tuesday evening, a motion of condolence with the bereaved relatives of the late Mrs. Callan was passed and ordered to be conveyed to them-. —R.I.P. The late Mr. Kiely was a native of Christchurch, who, coming to the north, commenced business as a watchmaker and jeweller at Patea, and there took a keen interest in public matters, being a member of the borough council and hospital board, also captain of the fire brigade for a number of years. Later he entered business at Ohakune, where he was chairman of the Town Board, and at a still later period he was elected, mayor of the town, which office he retained for some time; and subsequently was appointed a justice of the peace. When the war broke out'he enlisted for-home service, and served at Featherston Camp. He is survived by his widow, two daughters (Mrs. Leslie May, Paeroa, and v

MR. HUGH MeILHONE, TAUAIARUNUI.

Fortified by the last rites of our Holy Church, Hugh Mcllhone passed away at the hospital, Taumaranui, on Monday, the 21st ult. For a number of years the late Mr. Mcllhone had been in indifferent health. The four weeks of intense pain lie experienced in the local hospital was borne with wonderful patience, for his strong Catholic faith stood well to him, and was a source of great edification to all. Before being removed to Auckland the body remained overnight in the church, where it was visited by his many friends, including the good Sisters of St. Joseph and the school children. The funeral left St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Duffy, of Taumarunui, and was attended by a large number of mourners and sympathisers. He was laid to rest by the side of his parents in the Waikaraka Cemetery. The many who attended the funeral testified to the respect in which deceased was held. He is mourned by a widow, a brother, and sisters, who are well known in Auckland for their activities in Catholic affairs. —R.I.P.
