THE LATE FATHER DUFFY, PATEA: MONTH'S MIND

This solemn function took place in the parish church, on the 6th inst., in presence of a large number of the clergy and laity, who came from far and near to pay a last tribute of respect, v reverence, and love to the late Father Edward Duffy, late pastor of the district (writes an esteemed correspondent). High Mass was celebrated at 10.30 a.m., Rev. Father Outtrim (Wanganui) being" celebrant; Father Kelly (Manaia), deacon; Father Quealy (Petone), . subdeacon; and Father McLaughlin (Takapau), master of ceremonies. Also present were, Right Rev. Mgr. Walshe (Westport), Very Rev. Deans McKehna (New plymouth), and Power (Hawera), Rev. Fathers Long (Inglewood), Doolaghty (Opunake), Ginisty (Wanganui), Power (Marton), O'Dwyer (Feilding), Menard (Okato), Minogue (Waipara), Hegarty (Masterton), Kennedy (Eketahuna), Phelan (Carterton), Harnett (Taihape), Moore (Eltham), Griffin (Kilbirnie), Sweeney (Newtown), and Cabin" (Patea). A strong choir of the priests rendered the incidental music ' ; and the Rev. Father McManus (Palmerston North) preached the panegyric. Being a lifelong friend of the deceased, the preacher sketched his family history in Co Longford, showing that the Duffys were a priestly family who had helped many a promising boy to become a missionary priest; that the desire to help others was, in fact one of the great , characteristics of Father Duffy, who even among priests, 'was pre-eminent for his generosity and goodwill; to tall;-who came his way. : Though his life was one of /great suffering' for' the most part, his patience and cheerfulness were truly admirable. No wonder that he was greatly beloved by the priests and people.—R.l.P.
